I always wondered what the educational background of pro golfers are. Do they mainly consist of rich kids that dropped out of HS to persue a career in golf? I heard rumors that one progolfer was once a police officer and another was a pizza delivery driver. Do these guys have the smarts to work outside golf?

from the silver-spooned to the hard-workin' journeyman. HS-drop outs to MBA's and PhDs. ... well, maybe not PhDs.
But then again, you talkin' 'bout Teaching Golf Pros or Touring Golf Pros?

I think you need some kind of BUSINESS background in order to get yer card.
Otherwise they'd all be a typist/receptionist like GRT:hush: JJ

Seriously though you do need some kind of educational background to be on tour & in order to manage your expenses (travel, caddie, entry fees etc.) not to mention how to file your taxes on your winnings (must declare all earnings including out of country winnings)
Some knowledge must be present.

Whoever comes to mind. I know some Teaching Pros like the CPGA Teachers need to go to college, or something like that, how about tour pros?

I know one teaching pro who has a degree in kinesiology (ha ha, I spell checked it in Outlook) and I think that knowledge helps him a great deal with how the body works / how the swing works.
Unfortunately, we dont agree on one of his main philosophies and he's now a head pro with little time to work with lessons.

Two well-regarded golfers that don't have traditional higher learning background are Bernhard Langer and Sam Torrance - Both have respectable successful career and both are winning European Ryder Cup captains the last two times it was played.

I agree with iyell4 that it tends to run the full spectrum on both the PGA and European tours, but I think that is changing. A lot more of the younger players seem to have some college or university, simply because there are a lot more golf scholarships available at US universities than ever before. Its becoming more like the NFL, where virtually every player comes from a college team somewhere.
