Just turned on the coverage of PGA Grand Slam of Golf while they are showing Tiger highlights. On a par 5 early in the round TW hit driver off the deck from 292 uphill 2nd shot and flew it on the green. Whats more, it stopped within a couple of feet from where it landed. He must have launched that shot way up in the air to get it to stop that quickly. Absolutely incredible.

Can any of you hit driver off the deck successfully?

Contacting the ball is another story.

Ive never practiced it and only tried it once this year, in anger.:( I hit a low screaming cut that didnt go very far, compared to my normal 3wood.
Afterwards thought, this is prolly a tough shot.

1 choke about an inch.
2 move the ball back about 2 inches
3 grip lighter than normal,,,,[,if you are 5 on the scale try 3 ]
4 limit your lower body movement
5 swing like a 6 iron

that should about do it ,,,,,,good luck ,,have fun;) ;) ;)

... Can any of you hit driver off the deck successfully?Tried it today..(just because of this thread) I hit it just as well as my 3 wood..Mine you I was using my old set that has a regular size driver.. I Don't know if I would try it with my 450 cc club though.

Maybe next year @ the range I will give her a go..

As great as this advice prolly is to successfully hit a driver off the deck, I think I'll stick to my 3wood or 2iron.

Thankx anyways. :D

That's what I'm thinking. How would anyone (other than Tiger) be better off hitting driver off the deck than 3 wood? Maybe with the old school 265cc drivers, but not with the 460 deepfaced clubs out there now.

my 2 cents;)

haha reading this thread title...I didn't know what to expect. This is definitely a male topic I guess. Because I can't hit my driver like that even from the Tee!
It is nice to have different shots that you can use to go the inbetween distance though. As Laxgolf says, not many Pros other than Tiger will not try that shot in competition. If I'm not mistaken I think my bf uses a hybrid for those shots in between his driver and 3 iron. Isn't a hybrid much eacher to make contact with compared to Driver? Sorry, I couldn't let this become an all male thread! ;)

The only reason to hit driver off the deck is if you need a lower ball flight because you are hitting into the wind. And you're right, that shot is pretty much gone with the newer, 400cc+ drivers.

I've tried it a couple of times outdoors with my old Steelhead Plus without much success. But I used to hit driver off the deck indoors at the simulators all the time with the SH+ and my Taylor Made 200, where you are guaranteed a perfect lie and the drivers heads were small enough to make decent contact. The sims never liked my high ball flight, so hitting off the deck would give me a nice boring trajectory for more yardage.

my 2 cents;)I get what you're saying, but I'd rather move the ball back in my stance and slam away with a 3 wood/3 iron/hybrid. That way I know it'll at least go somewhere and my next shot will be in play. The chance of chunking or topping a 460 cc driver off the deck isn't really worth it IMO.

saw vijay try this shot at the grandslam of golf...

punched it right. they announcers said he practices this shot quite often. they also said it made sense for him because it took the ocean out of play because you wouldn't likely hit a hook with this shot...

i do believe vijay is using some kinda 400+ cc head...

Tiger Quote about being sick on the course in the 1st round:

"At the time, I'll be honest with you guys, I don't know where it was going to come out, the top or the bottom," Woods said. "So I had to know where the bathrooms were so I could plan it out."

Talk about honesty!

Yeah I've seen Countclub hit the driver off the deck and its pretty machine like .I dont think its necessary either BUT I do agree that working on difficult shots tells you where your game(grip) really stands.......He's off the deck and never down for the Count :nono:
