That's right, the LPGA players can wear shorts, but not the PGA. There are some events, not too many, where the PGA caddies can not wear shorts either, The Master's comes to mind, they have to wear those white overalls.

Correct if I'm wrong, but didnt even the OVGA "just" allow caddies to wear them also? I know way back neither the player nor the caddies could wear shorts. Even at the amateur levels.

Even at the amateur levels. Both the players and caddies are permitted to wear shorts in OVGA events and have been for a few years now. I don't know if there is an "inseam" rule, but I believe that for The Citizen Tournament that it was 8", which is an appropriate length and that is also acceptable by the OVGA.

Wearing athletic socks that come well up above the ankle is frowned upon. Ankle length or below(sockettes) is fine.

A friend of mine showed up at a local private club for a practice round for the July Intersectional matches, was told by the pro that he could not play with his above ankle athletic socks on and was invited into the Pro shop to buy a pair of sockettes. He went in, borrowed a pair of scissors and cut the socks off below the ankle. He then went out and played.

Nope, PGA players cannot wear shorts. I think the USGA is a bunch old fart traditionalists. Also, I believe a couple of years back, the LPGA VERY strongly recommended all players to start wearing make up and dress nicer.

hmm thats a pretty silly rule IMO. Kind of reminds me of when I went to an all girls catholic highschool. They didn't allow us to wear pants! I had to wear a kilt even in the cold Canadian winter! But eventually after years of petitioning to wear pants and they gave in and let us. Maybe the PGA players don't care enough about wearing shorts or they would have petitioned for a change in the rules a long time ago?!

Many PGA players play practice rounds in shorts...there's a pic of Tiger and Phil playing a practice round (both wearing shorts!) in this month's Golf Digest!!

yeah, and some caption about them not really being pals.
back on topic.
why would pros practice in shorts when they know they'll be playing in slacks?

(is this sorta like practicing with cb's and then playing with blades?)

On a serious note, the PGA Tour is essentially run by the players. They have committees for everything and they essentially have to agree on the dress code. If the players felt strongly enouigh about this issue, they would push to allow shorts in the Tour events. The Tour is a non profit organization of members.
So it is not so much they are "not allowed" as they have "elected not to". I suspect this rule may change in a generation. Many of the players buy into the idea that they look classier in pants rather then shorts. I recall reading some place a while back that the Tour has spent a great deal of time and effort on this issue. They determined the image of the Tour is better served by not allowing shorts.
I myself fear the day Joey Sindelar, Ed Fiori and Craig Stadler show up in shorts.

Funny how we immediately notice they are wearing shorts when we occassionally see them on the golf channel in non-tour events.
Cheers.

I personally agree with the players' decision to not wear shorts. It does look more professional in pants. And the hot weather isn't an issue. I always wear pants in tournament play.

Sure the "tour" may stay at ground level but everything around it is making truck loads o cash. They are even sponsored by trucking companies to save on trucking the cash.

You don't think "drive to a billion" came from some fat cats wallet, do ya?

I would prefer that the PGA, European PGA, Nationwide and especially the CHAMPIONS Tour not allow players to wear shorts.
I feel they look more professional in long pants. It has always been that way, and no need to change it now.
Sure I wear shorts in the summer. But you know what? I do feel better dressed if I play in pants. Somehow it just makes me feel more professional, and I am far from being a Professional:D
Some LPGA players would be better off in pants too!

On the bright side for wearing pants, those of you who shank your drives won't get bitten or rashes when you go hunting for your balls :)

I know that this thread was about shorts???

But is John Daly the only PGA player that does not wear a hat??? Is it because of their sponsors, or is it really because they like wearing one???

I for one don't wear a hat on the golf course...

But that's just me...

Daly does wear a hat from time to time. Earlyer on he was wearing a TaylorMade cap when he signed up with TM, then he wore a MaxFli cap when he moved to that division. Mickelson used to wear a visor only now he's been wearing a baseball style cap more often after he got sunburned on the top of his head one of the tourneys last season.

I like the unobstructed feeling of not wearing a cap when I go to the range etc. but on the course, I find that the cap acts like a horses' blinders ie. helps cut down peripheral distractions. Not to mention, doesn't hurt to have some sun protection these days.

Daly does wear a hat from time to time. .Actually I think Daly is wearing all the time for his sponsors sake. I thought I heard that on The Daly Planet.
