View Full Version : What golf ball is in your bag?

I hope I don't hear too many Pro V1's out there....:p ....some of us can't afford the $5 golf balls.....but I was just curious of taking a poll of the golf ball in your bag? And perhaps if the ball you use is on the expensive side, you could recommend a reliable two-piece or inexpensive 3-piece ball.

I use mid range balls, mostly Maxfli.
Maxfli XD for distance
Maxfli Revolution for feel
Last season I have switched to Top Flite Infinity Distance, cheaper than Maxfli and perform as well or better than Maxfli XD in terms of distance, and not as rock hard as other distance balls. Will try Infinity Ideal Spin next season to see if it can replace my Maxfli Revolution as the softer balls for better feel. Infinity in my opinion are the best value these days, ~20-25$ for pack of 15. Even though they are made by Top Flite, they no longer hit the green and bounce 50 yards past the flag.
Top Flite can also make high quality ball, they are the makers of Strata.

Callaway HX Tour is my ball of choice. If your looking for some thing at little less pricey, try the NXT Tour or the DT SoLo from Titleist, Pinnacle Exception, Srixon AD-333's.

Depending on the conditions, this year I alternated between the Srixon AD333 and Titleist DT So/Lo. I think I'll be moving to the AD333 full time next year. That ball does it all.

Yes, the ball is expensive at about $5 each, however, if you are prone NOT to lose them, thay are actually quite economical.
At the beginning of the '03 season, I played 17 rounds with just 3 balls, so that is less than $1 per round. The X's are very durable, as long as any distance ball, save maybe a Pinnacle, and keep their shape. Normally after 2 or 3 rounds I just chuck the ball in a box and resurrect them for October and November golf. I do lose the occasional one, BTW, and it does hurt a little.:(

The Infinity were made to replace the XL3000's...they even have all the same types that the XL3000's had.......buttery feel, ideal spin, distance and absolute straight..I was also thinking of trying these out since I used the former XL3000's in the past....and had no qualms about them....even the Strata Tour Professional is pretty cheap....$20 for 12 balls.....and it's 3 piece...
I've also heard a lot about the Pinnacle Exception balls.....but for $24 for a two piece....wouldn't one rather get the Strata?

ahaha.....that's the problem...if I lost only 3 balls over 17 rounds, I wouldn't have a problem using the Pro V1's....2-3 balls over 1 round is more around my avg....:$ ....
Pro V1's must have some considerable durability to be able to last more than 2 rounds tho, right?.........I remember using the Top Flite Tour balls...hit a my ideal shot the first time using it and put it onto the green....check my ball after I mark it and I see it got scuffed!.....there are some balls which last me over a round a half, but by then, it becomes too scuffed to play IMO......

i use whatever balls i can find on the golf course...
and i use the crappier ones if do find one....I save all the Nike and Callaway ones ..dunno why..they are so precious...
but when i do buy golf balls...its usually because its cheap/on sale...mostly RAM ones and Topflight....
i can't really tell the difference between good and bad ones yet....and also i lose a lot of balls...

I've become Maxfli loyal over the past 2 seasons. Started with the Revolutions and then the Noodles. Revolutions were pretty good in all aspects. Noodles were good but got scuffed up very easily (soft ball) so I went through them pretty fast. This past season I stuck with Maxfli M3 Reds. I found them the best out of all the Maxfli (except the new Rev Tour). Durable, long, soft, feel, it has it all. I play the same ball for over 2 rounds one time before I lost it.
I've also tried a sleeve of Callaway HX Tour and they're pretty good too, but because they're so soft, they scuff easily too.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned Nike balls. I personally don't like them. But never tried the Nike One or the Two.

Titleist Pro V's if I am playing okay, otherwise nxt tour, So Lo,. If I am on an "off" day then anything other than pinnacles or Top Flite XL, or 2000. I like the infinity and the 3000's are okay too. Softer balls definetly make a difference.
Playing the club link courses, especially after a tournament usually nets several new balls, quite often they are Pro V's hogans or similar.

If you like the Tour HX. Try the nike TA2 spin. Really sweet ball and it's on sale for 30 bucks at most places now.
ProV1x , HX Tour , or TA2 Spin from May to September. Whatever I find in the bushes for the remainder of the golf season.

Titleist NXT or DT Solo. I made a decision to use only Titleist (unless it's the odd found ball I happen to pick up) because of my respect for the Pres. of the company and the way he treated Moe Norman. You really don't see that kind of behavior from large companies any more.

what did he do for Moe Norman? He promised to pay Moe Norman $5000 a month USD for life. I'm not sure when it started. Moe always had financial trouble. This helped him become financially stable before he passed. He never had to worry about a place to sleep, food, or golf. What a legend.

http://www.scigolf.com/scigolf/myths/titleistmn.htm How can one not be touched by a story like that?
In addition to Titleist, the Natural Golf Corporation contributed financially to Moe. He was able to buy a new Cadillac and obviously never have to worry about where his next meal was coming from.
After Moe passed away, it has been reported that almost $30,000 was found in his car along with many sets of clubs and various books and articles about him.
Wally Uilheim's generosity is one good reason to play Titleist.

Agreed....it was also Titleist who decided to cut Mickelson loose from the endorsement contract after Mickelson asked for a bigger paycheque after his great season...they could have given him more money, but Titleist has long been known as a 'golf product' first company before 'endorsement product' first company like Nike......very respectable company.

There's more to the Mickelson story than that. It's not as easy as 'I want more money now - oh yeah, here's the door.' The real reasons have never been explained. There's all sorts of Mickelson Vegas gambling debts to Amy's implants stories. Until both sides divulge info, I'm not buying any of it.

Tiger Woods is not somebody I would describe as a role model due to his sometimes quite embarassing and childish temper tamtrums when he hits a bad shot (there are several first-hand accounts of him cursing and swearing for extended periods of time while standing right next to little kids in the gallery, when faced with a horrible or unplayable lie). Having said that, I've never heard of any player teamed up with Tiger who had trouble getting along with him. The body language between Mickleson and Tiger and the way they performed and interacted during the Ryder Cup made me think that perhaps the problem was with MIckleson and made me question his character. But then, it's just my impression and opinion.

I was at the Ryder Cup and followed their group all day. It was pretty funny watching them. They spoke maybe 10 times the entire round and Wodds was absolutely seething when Philly Mick shank his drive (on 16??? - can't remember). He was seriously freaking out. I've also been to other PGA tournaments Tigers been in and he seems to drop the F-bomb without thinking twice about it. Personally, I think Tiger's full of himself. I can obviously respect his talent, but not a big fan of his otherwise.

hmm I feel the need to defend Tiger after reading the last couple of posts.
Most of my friends and acquaintances would say that I'm a nice person. And it is very rare that I would use the 'f' word even when I'm mad or upset. But on a bad round after numerous mistakes on the golf course...I drop the 'f' bomb too.
IMO I don't think it's fair to judge a person's character solely by what you see on TV and by what you see on the Golf Course.

That is true in our daly lives but I think Tiger puts on a good act when he's being interviewed. He knows exactly what to say without really "saying anything". He's always politically correct and rarely offends anyone. True he is highly competitive and even I will always drop the F Bomb atleast once per hole. But he's got to realize he's being watched by thousands not only on the course but on TV. He's got to show some class in that sense. He's been fined numberous times by the PGA for such behaviour.

IMO I don't think it's fair to judge a person's character solely by what you see on TV and by what you see on the Golf Course.Tiger is an amazing talent, My post wasn't about judging his character (actually it was to make a point about Mickleson), but I do have strong opinions about his public image (and the never ending hype) as a role model. I must say that I have been known to drop the odd f* bomb as you call it, out of frustration as well, however, Tiger makes tens of millions of dollars a year in prizes, appearance fees and endorsements. He is being paid very handsomely and whether he likes it or not has a responsibility to conduct himself with demeanor on TV and the golf course. I think throwing temper tantrums in front of a gallery, and especially kids (and let's face it, the people watching are indirectly putting all that money in his pocket) is irresponsible. There are dozens and dozens of top PGA players I can name who conduct themselves in a more professional manner. Gofl has always been known to be a sport where people conducted themselves with sportmen(women?)ship and with dignity. I guess things have changed with Tiger and Nike on the scene.

Actually I refuse to purchase anything from Nike because Nike's key player, Eldrick Woods, refuses to attend our annual National Championship, aka the Canadian Open. Doesn't seem to visit foreign countries much unless their $2M in it for him. Great player, no doubt, but not the ambassador Arnie, Jack and Gary are.

I discovered the Dunlop Loco Crazy Long ball last year and now most of my regular group use it. It is the ball developed for John Daly and it is long. I think a box of 12 is under $40.00 and for us, it is a good as most. Very long and spins very well. Not for slicers as it spins more than most but we can't hit anything further. Performance of the PROV1 for $20.00 less.
Great deal. Also liked the Precept Tour ball and the Wilson Tour Elite which I tried a few times.
Now for 2005 everybody has new golf balls coming out, key is finding the deals rather than spending $60.00 a dozen.

I wholeheartedly agree. Like Tiger's the only Pro who would dare to do that on the course. C'mon, in opposite to other players he's got camera on him 24/7. That alone makes him stand out.
Also, as a single player I play most of my golf with strangers. If I'd get a buck for everytime one of these guys uses the f' bomb (to be honest, i do it too ... sometimes) I'd never would need to pay a greenfee anymore. But since I'm not on TV ... who really cares. My point is ... why do we expect these guys, young kids like Tiger & Co. to be holyer than the pope?

To answer the ball question ... I don't know yet what to play.
Tried last season all kind of balls but have not found yet the right one for my game. Tried HX Tour, Nike One Black, Pro V1X, Srixon UrX ... liked the HX Tour and One Black best but am not happy about the way they play around the greens. Ended up settling for the HX Red last season but still looking for a ball that performs better around the green.
Will give the Pro V1 (not the X) another chance but I refuse to pay over $60 for a dozen. Another ball I will test is the Nike One Gold. Somehow I tried only the Black but from what I heard the Gold might be actually better for me.

I was just agreeing with QB who was defending Tiger in another post ... that's all. Used to use the f'bomb more as I was a beginner ... mea culpa, mea maxima culpa ... but not much anymore actually.
Not that I got so good that I don't screw up anymore ... no ... it's just that my attitude changed with getting better. I came to realize that I can't change things anyways when they are done. So, why getting all puzzled up. Rather go and deal with it.

After trying a number of different brands and types of balls I find the most important characteristic is how the ball feels around the green and from 100 yrds. Wedges, Chip shots, flops, putting etc are the money shots. Spin and feel you can notice. I honestly can't tell when I use "distance" balls if they're really going further than other types of balls.

Last year I found an almost brand new Titleist NXT Tour and the next round I played I shot an 87. That made me rather happy so I have stuck with that one. I won a box of them at a company tournament at the end of last year, so I'm ready to roll with a brand new box of them.
I think to buy at Golftown is $39.99 a box. Although I would be intersted to try the new Callaway Hot as they are about the same price...(I'm a sucker when it comes to Callaway - got the clubs, the putter, the wedges. Probably my NXT you found, LOL. I've never lost a whole box of balls faster than the NXT Tours I bought last season.
Tried HX Tours after the NXT debacle, and have stuck with it since. It's loooooong. Longer than V1's for me.
NOTE: I'm not blaming or dissing the NXT. I was playing especially poorly at the time. Come to think of it, I play poorly at the best of times.

I agree with the Maxfli M3, problably one best balls I've played for the money. Last year I bought 6 boxes from Ebay, worked out to $12 Canadian a box. I also took the plunge and bought a box of Nike One, nice ball but a bit expensive for my hacking.

Just curious Special K...what do you think of the Hogan Apex Tours?
I picked up a couple boxes (as well as some TA2 Spin) at Golf Town around Xmas when they do their regular clearing out of the previous year's stock (think they were 1/2 price). I've read good things but have heard some people complain that they shred a little too easily. True??
Anyway...last year:
Too many different balls to recall them all, but faves were Titleist NXT Tour (found while scouring the marsh for a lost cheap ball :D ) and Callaway CTU 30 Red (from last year's GT Xmas clearout). Worst: Nike Distance (uggh! A rock with a swoosh on it, poorly disguised as a golf ball).

I played these balls last two years in a row and plan to play em again this year.
Every bit as good as a pro V1. Soft around the greens, spin well from fairway lies and just as long as everything else. Durability is similar to any top of the line soft ball.
I heard "the Hawk" from Hogan is just under the Apex Tour and GT is selling them quite cheap. I'd say they would be worth trying but I still have four dozen Apex Tours in the closet.
