Forgot to post a few weeks ago. I got a letter from the organizers of the LPGA event here in London this year saying that I've been choosen to work this event! Not sure of what job I've been given, but they said they will be in touch in the up coming months. Also, they said that they are looking for more people to vounteer for the event, so if anyone has some extra time off in the summer and would like to come to London to see some great golf on a very private course, sign up! I think there is a $75 charge, but you get a package that seems to be very good. I think you get a hat, golf shirt, backpack, etc. This should be a fun week and hopefully we can meet some great golfers!

Simple, as a volunteer you get a golf shirt, hat, two parking passes for the week, and two admission passes for the week. So for $65 you are way ahead of the game.

i think the point made earlier is that as a volunteer sans renumeration for the hours you'll be helping out before, during and long after the event, perhaps the items you mentioned should be gratis as a token of appreciation for volunteering.

They should be but they never are. Bell Canadian Open charges for their volunteer packages, at least they did in the past. I remember a guy from my old club used to volunteer years ago at Glen Abbey and he had to pay for his shirt and hat back then. (early 1990's)
If you look at it paying $65 is not that bad considering you get two free weekly parking passes and two weekly admission passes. If you had to purchase those you would spend more than $65. I have already been told that I have a free parking and admission pass from a friend of mine who is going to volunteer. I guess if he wanted he could sell them to me, and get some of his money back. A weekly ticket is $50 and a weekly parking pass is $20. Plus GST.

Things certainly have changed over the last few years. My neighbour used to volunteer for the mens Open at Glen Abbey every year. I'm pretty sure she didn't have to pay anything and as a thank you got a free round at the course late in the season.

Uh..? is that 2free passess for admission/parking on top of yours as a volunteer? Cuz if not..what they are saying is:
We want you to work for us, we won't pay you for your time, actually we will charge you.
But as one of the bonus'!!! You get parking and admin for yourself..isn't that great! We won't charge you to get in for your free job...I mean 'your' paid job.

I know USGA (US Open) and Senior PGA does the same for their events, The goodie bag which contains your outfit for the time you volunteer normally exceeds the fee charged.
I believe the nominal fee is to eliminate the people that like the idea of getting the swag (which is pretty limited in one sense) and they hope only to attract those that are serious about participating.

How about you don't provide any goodies.
But you 'give' the free labor volunteer a uniform i.e. a shirt, necessary to identify themselves, and a free pass to get in, cuz you need to get in, and a free parking pass, cuz your free labor needs to park somewhere.
And thats it.
Sound reasonable?
Adding a charge of $65 bucks to the above, for free labor, does not sound fair!
Cheers, Shark:(

Agree.....our time isn't good enough. You should get the hats and everything else for volunteering your time, not the other way around.

Why charge to see if your serious. I would do it by having a clinic at like 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning, and if you're serious you'll make the effort to attend the clinic that would show you how to control the gallery or whatever it is and at the end of the clinic you get your package. It's such a slap in the face to have to pay $ to volunteer, because then it's really not volunteering is it?

London is hosting the Scott Tournament of Hearts this year,( the Canadian ladie's curling championship ). To volunteer there you pay $80 and do not get admission passes. You are given the option of buying a weekly standing room pass for $50 which gets you into all of the games and the bar.

Hey I don't like the idea of volunteers paying anymore than anyone else does. But that's the way it is and you and I can not change that fact. As stated above, maybe they do it to keep the riff raff from volunteering. If you have some money invested in this you are going to show up to do your job. Nothing worse than people who volunteer months ahead of the event and then do not show up to do the job.:nono:
As for the parking/admission passes, all I know is my friend told me he got two of each and would not be needing them. So I assume these are extra passes.
Bottom line, if you do not want to spend $65 then do not volunteer. I am sure the organizers will have more than enough help that week.

Well said....
People know what they're getting into, and they're signing up. It's not like you sign up and then find out there is a $65 charge. If people don't agree with it, don't sign up.
I know lots of people who volunteer and pay the fee b/c they want to indirectly help promote golf in the area. Also, its not a bad gig when you consider the # of hours you work vs what you get.

It's all about supply and demand. If no-one volunteered, maybe the organisers would have to pay $65 instead!

Interesting....just checked the prices.... $50 week pass for one, plus parking. I imagine I'll just walk since it's fairly close. I'm excited to see what those ladies can do around the Hunt.

I agree that volunteers should not have to pay for the priviledge.
On the other hand, I think the $75 package is a rather good deal. However, not sure if I would want to wear the 'women's open' hat in any other occasion outside of that event.
What about signing up to be the volunteer, receive the package, then don't show up to 'work' but use the package?

I attended the 1993 du Maurier Classic LPGA event at the Hunt Club when Brandi Burton won in a playoff. I can not recall the winning score but I know she won it in a playoff against Betsy King.
Joanne "Big Momma" Carner was there, I can still remember her standing on the 10th tee, her first hole of the day. She was swinging a driver left handed to loosen up, and her swing was as smooth left handed as it was right handed. Dottie Pepper was there, she was fun to watch, Helen Alfredsen was also there. It was a good event for London.
I know one thing, the ladies played that course very well. So we should be in for an interesting tournament.
One nice thing is Lorie Kane is now sponsered by CN so she will be talking up the event to her fellow LPGA members and trying to convince them to come to London and play in the tourament. So hopefully there is a good field there.
If you have never seen the women play up close you will be in for a suprise. They are good :)
Make sure you take a couple of bottles of water with you! I remember in 1993 that food and drinks were really exspensive at this event. I took my 8 year old daughter along and the price of a hot dog & pop was outrageous!

However people want to volunteer their time as they like to be around Pro Golfers. They won't have any problems getting enough volunteers. I have a friend who signed up and he is quite willing to pay the package price.

So far, I've volunteered for the 2002 Women's at Angus Glen, the 2002 Men's at Angus Glen and the 2004 Men's at Glen Abbey and I NEVER got more than 1 parking pass.
