What do you do before you go for a putt? Do you change your routine for longer shots?

Hey 69, do you mean when practising or are you referring to the routine during a game? I find it really helpful to practise right before a game. The best thing for me is to boost up my confidence by getting in the short putts. I read that your swing should be like a pendulum and the movement should come from your shoulders not your arms. I'm struggling with my putter right now though. So I'm on the hunt for a new one at Golftown. :)

Well, I like to go through a repetitive routine before I take my putts. It's just like going through a routine before shooting free throws in basketball.

I feel as though it just relaxes me and let's me focus more on my shot.

Its always good practise to have a routine for shooting free throws and making putts. Long or short, I do the samething. This is my routine:
1. Try to read your line from behind your ball and then read your putt from behind the HOLE. (opposite side). You'll be surprised at how different a perspective you get.
2. I then take my ball and aim the letters of my ball to where I want my ball to roll, NOT the hole. Pick out a target. I can be a burnt blade of grass or an old ball mark.
4. I make sure my posture is comfortable and arms loose. Align my body, shoulders and putter face to the target and and make 2-3 practise swings to get the feel of speed and the amount of pressure your putt will be.
5. Step in and putt, trying to repeat your practise swing. Hopefully the ball goes where I had aimed. The ball not going in the hole doesn't mean its a bad putt. Could be just a incorrect read or just a bad break.

I'm not a good putter but this is my routine...sometimes it all goes to waste when I miss a 4 footer! hahaha...

I had a friend teach me to position my putter face in the direction I want to hit the ball, then place both my feet parallel to the length of the putter head. This way you would feel more comfortable when you do your practice swings and you can always go back to your original position with your putter.

Picking up the golf ball to arrange the letters in the right direction sounds like cheating to me Focker... j/k

just like taking a free throw, it's always good to have a routine when setting up for your shot, whether it be off the tee or putting.....it's just the way of putting your mind and body in some form of comfort zone...

everyone has their own routine of doing this and some are much diff't than others.....

no pt saying my routine cuz it rarely works....

Working on one's short game is important so I'm going to add one more thing. :) It doesn't hurt to take a few practise strokes while waiting for your turn at the green. As long as you do not stand in the peripheral view of the player making their putt. And as long as you are ready to approach ball when it is your turn.
