my friends and i play give or take 18 inches about Being the organiser of a group of a dozen guys who play each weekend, I have the opportunity to write the rules.

For 2005, I have established the ***** rule.:) Putts this length or less are condsidered gimmes, otherwise they must be putted out.

Commonly, however, putts inside the "rubber," ie., the length of a normal golf grip, are good. The problem is that on some long putters the grip is 3' long, so this rule had to change.

HA! I want to play with your friends then Michael. I've been known to miss my 2 footers so whenever we play for Skins, they make me putt out. Anything inside a foot should be a gimme though. Of course for tournament play, we putt out for everything.

I am with Shadow on the grip rule. But this only applies to bogeys or worse.

Par or better HAS to be putted out. There is not way I am ever giving away a birdie. The presure could make you blow a putt inside the grip for a birdie.

I always putt out, even if 'given' the putt by a playing partner. I walked all the way down the fairway chasing that little white ball, I bounced it off trees and thrashed it out of sand traps and I need to hear the rattle as it drops into the bottom of the cup.:D

18 inches'ish or if the guy has a 4 foot putt for triple or worse, I'll say pick it up.

Good call Noct. They're a bad habit that turn into missing putts under pressure. If people I play with want them I let them have them. But I am very clear in telling them not to pick up my ball or knock it away from the whole assuming I want them also. The rules of golf are clear. The ball must enter the hole to finish. If you are playing for nothing more than the fun, have at them. If your using your results for a handicap, you should not

18 inches'ish or if the guy has a 4 foot putt for triple or worse, I'll say pick it up. On one hand, I understand the reasoning for conceding 4 foot putts for triple or worse, however, I see a problem with this. Some of the guys I play with are low single digit handicaps, two of which are 0 and +1. ESC, Equitable Stroke Control allows these guys to count a score no worse than bogey. What one of them does is as soon as he makes a one over par stroke, he picks up. So in his mind he never has a bad hole. Never. This is wrong.

As a number of us play in OVGA and QGA tournaments, I feel that is important, mentally, to have to accept that bad holes occur. We learn a lot more in golf by our mistakes than by our good shots, but if you never make a mistake, you never learn. So becoming tournament tough is aided by making a big number now and then. It certainly helps when coping with the pressure that some feel under tournament situations. If you never have to make your 1' to 4' putts, what happens when you must make them in a tournament? Choke city. I really like "Nocturnal's" philosophy: Putt everything out.

What is the basis behind the 'gimmie' ? Is it sportsmanship or to speed up play?

Anytime $$$ is involved we putt out the holes. I've often seen good putters miss 2 footers because something's on the line. If someone's strength is their mental toughness, you can't take away that advantage with gimmees.

G4F, it is for both. You concide that the player can make the putt, and it also moves people along the course a little quicker.

You give kick in gimmies even when $$$ are on the line, as we almost all do.

hmm well when I play with the girls...our gimmes are about 30 cm long. haha And if someone is having a bad hole maybe more! But I agree all birdie ops have to be putted out. I usually like to putt it in but I don't putt in if it's less than 2 inches from the hole. It would just be holding up the group.

I wonder in non-tournament situations do you guys give girls more breaks and get more lax with the gimmes. Or are you guys just as tough on the girls?
