View Full Version : What do you shoot??

The Copetown Woods thread got me thinking about what some members have said and what I believe most new golfers think - am I good enough???
There always seems to be this perception that when an event is planned, that the 'regular' participants might not feel "good enough" to come out and join in the fun. I think a great deal of this is due to the misperception that golfers, in general, are better than what is actually the case. Keep in mind that I do recognize that there are good golfers out there and that a golf forum such as this tends to attract the golfer that is more serious about the game than the guy that just goes out because his buddies called. Because of this, I do feel that this poll will be somewhat skewed as we will be missing the group of people that don't care about the game, but still play. This being said, I think it would be beneficial to post a poll that can give some visualization of how the members score.
Since many people don't fully understand the handicap system, let alone have a handicap, as well as the fact that people play many different courses, from various tee decks, I made the poll up to reflect gross scores. Do be honest and remember, if your foursome allows mulligans, etc. please add that to your score - ie: you're not shooting in the 70's if you get 6 mulligans on each 9.

I think this is a great idea akrus. I voted honestly (100 plus, but hoping to be in the 90 or high 80's this year) and hope others do the same. :)

Sandbagger...
LOL!!!
I remember how 'self-concious' being a beginner can be. Once I realized that not everyone was a professional and that the game really is tougher on the majority than I was led to believe, I really think that I was able to enjoy the game more.
It's true that it's great to be able to compete, but at the same time, if you lose the ability to just go out and have fun by meeting new people - and you're not making a living at competitive golf - then you really are missing the point of this great sport.
Good for you in answering honestly - that is golf's greatest challenge as there are so many opportunities not to follow the rules, you really have to be your own judge and come clean with how you truly perform.
Looks like the poll is getting a good response so it should be interesting to see how this pans out.

I proudly shoot in the low 90's. I gave up caring about my score a long time ago and have been having more fun ever since. I also like all the cash I have been saving on not paying for any golf lessons. An added bonus to this is I don't care what my playing partners shoot either. I play my own game and don't have to worry that I am getting out played by anyone.

I shot my worst round of the year at the TGN event I went too. I think most of it was pressure of fealing my game was not there, and guess what when I played it really wasn't there. I think this is a good thread to help those of use that are normal golfers to relax. On average I shoot in the low 90's, my best round last year was 81 on par 72 local course, and an 82 on my home course par 71.
I didn't feel terrible though as last year was only my second year of golfing. I'm sticking to my guns and taking my lessons and practicing in hopes of someday reducing my HC.

Great Poll! I think because so many people on TGN are so passionate and knowledgeable it gives the impression that everyone is a single dig hc. Which was my impression when I first started reading. I think this is a great way to show that there is a normal distribution of hc's here.
My only question is, is this the morning round score or the post 5-10 beer afternoon score? ;)
Either way I'm a 90's golfer.
Damn you 80's golfers with your fairway drives and getting up and down!

Mok, I think that with the response and usefulness of this poll, it may be beneficial to make this a sticky - that way, as members join on, they can see where they fit in and we can maintain a running total.
Just a thought as it seems to be getting good feedback.

The poll is a great idea as many golfers feel they are not good enough to play in tournaments and that is just not the case.
Especially when handicaps and different flights are used for most of the golf leagues out there. Anyone, has the opportunity to win a golf tournament and some money along the way. Just as long as its not my money, lol.

Even though the majority of my scores are in the 80s, this is mostly due to playing on courses are I very familiar with or with friends that I know... Playing on a course for the first time or trying to compete with people that I don't know can easily increase my score into the 90s, its just happens... For anyone to not play because of the nerve factor, just take a deep breath and just try to concentrate on having a good time and not your score... Just my 2 cents...

I think as long as people remember that we all started out as 100+ shooters at some point in our lives then whe shoudl be fine.
When people say to me before our rounds to please be patient with them cause they are just learning, I just reassure them that I was once in their shoes and am just happy to be in their company and that the golf is an added bonus to the day.
Handicap is a weird system. Mine last year got down to a 3, but I did not shoot 3 over par that often at the Rock thats for sure.

I said 80s, but have been known to visit both the 70s and 90s, it really comes down to which course, what kind of day I am having, and which tees. That's where the genius in me came out - I specifically structured the question to relate to the last 10 round you played. Just remember back to that and there should be no, "well sometimes I'm a..."
I too, have had sub 80 rounds and even 100+ rounds - that's what makes the pros worth paying - they tend not to have such staggering differences.
I agree with Will, in that whoever posted they shot the majority of their last ten rounds in the 60's should be on tour. Heck, I'd pay that person's green fee at Eagle's Nest if s/he shot 69 or better from the tips in a round with me. (maybe that'll bring Tiger out and he'll confess his TGN handle to us...):hush:

My last ten rounds, I'd say I averaged in the low 90's. I'm a pretty hot and cold type player, still in need of a first lesson. My best ever was an 84, but at the same time, there are those frustrating days when I fall over the century mark. The big stick is my worst enemy. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to get some great tips at Copetown. Can't wait to see so many of you there.

I shoot much better at courses that I know well. Not having to worry about distances, hidden hazards and angles helps immensely. I played a lot last summer (95 rounds) and got my game into the mid 80's playing from 6300-6500 yard distances. My game suffers a lot when I play from longer than 6500 as I am an average distance hitter and hate hitting 200 yard approach shots:mad: .
It's all about putting though. Having only 1 or 2 three puts per round will keep a good round going!

PRE- Copetown tip. Get a driver with 11.5* of loft and get fitted for the shaft. That way, the loft will help straighten out those wayward drives. The ball will only spin in one direction at a time. The more backspin (or loft) you throw at it, the less sidespin is possible. Therefore, straighter drives without swing changes.

My goal for 2006 is to break 100. After a 8-10 year break, I just starting playing golf again in mid to late 2005....probably got in about 6 to 8 rounds, mostly 9 holes or the occasional 18. Replaced my Northwestern clubs with mostly components. Hopefully, I will see some improvement in my swing and game this year and not get too frustrated. Frustration led me away from golf for an extended period.
This year I will probably be sticking to mostly par 3 and wide open, lesser groomed courses.....it's better for the wallet too. If I see some substantial improvement (ie. breaking 100), I may treat myself to a round or two on the better local courses.

Great poll, however I think it would be better if next time we do it in increments of 5 (80-84, 85-89 , 90-94 , 95-100 etc) I see this one a bit deceiving if you shoot 89 or 91 since it puts you on two separate brackets. I shoot low 90's although as the season progresses I drop to high 80's

Thing is, of your last 10 rounds, there wouldn't be that confusion as you just have to look at what those scores were and determine what category you fall into. The only exception being if 5 rounds were 79 and 5 rounds were 80, then I think you could rightfully claim either or.
I do agree that it could help to have it broken into 5's in the future.

Last year was pretty much my break out year. It was my second year of playing and in the winter last year I hit at Launch about once every 2 weeks. My goal last year was to break a 100. I played about 30 rounds last year and I was shooting low to mid 90's which I was really happy with.
I took a couple of lessons at the driving range right across Angus Glen at the tale and of the season. I can't believe I forgot his name, but he is a super awesome guy and as soon as it gets warmer I'll be there again.
This year I'd like to shoot high 80's to low 90's consistently even on tough courses like TImberidge and Lakeridge Links.
That's my life story...

after several years shooting in the low 100's (or equivalent, I played a lot of 9-hole and executive courses) I almost bypassed the 90's completely and settled into the low-mid 80s in '04. Last season I didn't get to play much ($$$) and was in the high 80's. May be heading the wrong way again this season (lack of playing $$$) but hopefully won't skip the 90's and be back in the 100's. :hush:
Went to the range yesterday and was OK with mid-short irons and especially good with the fairway metals which are usually my worst clubs. Long irons and driver were in bad pre-season form.

Last summer I trended upwards instead of downwards. My wife and I had a baby in March so golf was on the back-burner. I played maybe 10 rounds and hit 5 or 6 buckets of balls through the entire summer. Before last summer's blip I typically scored in the mid-high 80's. This year I'm back in the swing of things and hope to regain some lost ground. I'd be happy just to get into the low 80s.

All I can say is that in the one TGN outing I attended, nobody seemed to care how you play, also long as you keep the pace, and have fun. If you are thinking that you "aren't good enough" to play with the TGN group, don't worry about it. Everybody is out to have a good time, and nobody cares if you are shooting 75, or 125.

Providing I'm playing semi-regularly - I consistantly shoot from even par to low 80s, but I average about 74-78 on a regular basis. My worst game of the season is usually no more than mid-80's though.
However, last season I played only 10 rounds and averaged about 80-84 with a low of 72 and a high of 88.

Well I seem to be in one of the two majority groups, I tend to shoot in the 80's ususally, but on any "Given day" I can join the century club. As for playing with people who are not at the same level, I say great bring them on it's a great day for a walk in the sun. I personally do not understand people who need to have their golf game done and wrapped up in 3 hours. :shade:

hey,
In the last 5-6 rounds i have shot 75-76. I usually shoot around the low 70's t omid 70's. I play in alot of tourneys. Play on the CJGA, GAO, and the fture links tour. I was ranked #2 in Canada last year and my goal is to get a golf scholarship down south.

I think a LOT of people dont count all their shots. Thats how in tournaments you see ballooned scores. Same with not counting penalty shots.
I usually shoot pretty close to my handi with the occasional one above and the occasional one below.

My scores were always around 110-120. Just hack it around and enjoy being outside. Since going with my instructor late last year and over the winter, I'm mostly around 90 now, with a few in the mid 80's mixed in. Life is good and the game is more fun.:D

Well if i could do as my namesake says, i would be in the 70s, BUT LOL thats just not case.i have to answer 80s being honest and all,but we can all take it easy on ourselves so early into the season.and how about those three in the 60s WOW and pre June as well thats fantastic scoring.Hopefully we will all get to see them play in a tourny this year and watch their majestic play!!

I am usually around 105. This is my first season golfing and I shot 104 at Lowville on Thursday. I am improving a lot because I am getting more pars in my score, but I also got 2 double pars on hole 9 and 18 both par 4’s (just was not focusing on those holes for some reason). Also My short game is horrible So if I can cut out 3 putts (and 4 putts ) I can easily shoot in the 90's, and my chipping is also pretty bad and that contributes to my bad short game. My iron shots are improving as I am learning to take it easy on my swings and getting better results with it. My driving is also horrible so I guess the only thing that somewhat saves my game is my iron play which is improving. I plan on taking lessons this summer (probably at hidden lakes because I hear they have good instructors and it is close to where I live). Also another thing holding back my score from the 90's is that I lack a lot of equipment. I have a set of Wilson di5 irons, A Wilson dd5 driver 10 degree regular, and a cheap old worn out northwestern sand wedge and a cheap ping knockoff putter (goliath bb one, or something like that). This summer I plan to buy some real golf shoes (no more slipping around with my running shoes ). I also plan on buying some good wedges and a nice putter like the white hot 2 ball because I have used it many times and find that It helps my putting out quite a bit. I also really need to buy a hybrid 3 and a 3 wood (right now the longest club in my bag other than my driver is my 5 iron, because I do not use my 3 and 4 because they are to hard to hit so I do not even carry them because it usually yields bad results). With some new well needed equipment and lessons and more practice I am sure that I will make my goal for me this year and Break into the 90's (It should be very soon).

Being a beginner out of my last 10 scores definitely 100+ Usually around the 120 mark or just under. But the last game I played, yesterday, It was an even 100 + 2 mulligans = 102.

being a great golfer when you're young is a fantastic achievement. But to be honest, I'm way more impressed with guys who have taken the sport up late and turned themselves into good golfers.
Hell when I was a kid, ages 6-18, I could learn a skill, perfect it, and forget it all in the same day!
