I am having a set of clubs sent from the USA to my friends place in Toronto. The value of the clubs is $400 US. I know USPS is the best way to go, but is there any thing else I need to know? Expedited? Global Express Mail? Economy? Trying to save on shipping. My last package sent USPS came to me customs free, but I don't know what service the sender used.

Probably USPS Global Express mail for custom-free.

UPS will surely charge you brokerage fee on top of any duty that the government may impose.

I agree with WB that USPS would be the better way.

I have bought many times from the US in the past (golf related and other items) Here're my observations:

Avoid Global Priority Express, these are cleared customs by PBB and they do charge Brokerage and applicable taxes !

Global Priority is great if you can wait to get your stuff (about 7 - 10 days) Clears Customs by CPC (if they present them) and fee is only $5.00 (plus GST and PST)

Avoid UPS ground (Ridiculous Brokerage Fees)

UPS Express, it's more expensive than most of the services, but some of the large US retailers / eBay sellers get great discounts which make it worth it (Customs Brokerage is included)

Hope this helps

FedEx and UPS both offer expedited, brokerage fee included, services. Their ground services have outrageous brokerage fees, not the expedited services.

If your shipper is going to use USPS then Global Express Mail service is the way to go, it is trackable and worth the extra cost which is not that much. Service from the US is usually 3-5 days, hell I got a club from Hawaii delivered here in 3 days!!

I bought a X-18 for my uncle through Ebay and seller sent package by UPS ground but for some reason there was no tax, brokage fees, etc.
He did mark package as a gift and value around $250.

I get the shipper to mark down "WARRENTY RETURN" on my packages for sofball bats. And not once have I ever had to pay duties on it.

Also ONLY use USPS.

Very Lucky. UPS normally would charge $40 customs broker fee and collect 15% tax.

Global priority has a four pound maximum, so it likely will not work.
The best option is global airmail.
As far as customs with this option, you will surely pay, but they will charge $5 fee from cda post, plus the taxes.
Here are their options, if you click on each service, you will then see on right an option for 'rate tables'. Click on those and it will show times of delivery and prices per weight.
For i.e. if you chose global priority you will see it only goes up to 4lbs which is not going to take a full set, unless you get lucky. Cheers.

The link above will show you all you need to know about UPS brokerage charges. What can you learn from it? If UPS is a must, go with expedited.

USPS TAXMAN came to collect today. Almost a month ago, I purchased 2 scotty camerons on the same day. The first, a new Laguna Oil Can, bought in Canada, arrived promptly the next day. The second, a new Studio Design 2 arrived today via USPS. Before I could even hold the box in my hand, I had to pay $45 in taxes. Ouch! Just a slight oversight on my behalf. So what I thought was a steal at $260cdn has now cost me $305 :(. Still a great price for a new club no longer available. It's a beaut! Now, I just have to decide which one to keep before I put a ball to them. If any!!!:D

Ahhhh a club ho's life.

Ondadl, the $45 sounds consistent.

If the value of the putter is $260CDN, taxes will be around $39ish. Add in $5 for CanadaPost Brokerage handling fees, and voila, $45 mark.

I don't know if I'd go that route. Sounds like an even worse idea than the gift, to me. Let us know how you made out.

Like that "Warranty Return" idea!!:)yes i admit it wasn't going to say anything, but this sounds like a good workaround let's keep this between us:cool: if too many people start doing it, they'll start demanding previous transaction records i've heard of it happening before, where they charge you and then ask for proof in order to be refunded

thankfully, my father lives in Florida for the winter, so I can always have stuff shipped to him, and pick it up while on vacation and/or get him to bring it back!

USPS global express. I've used them for my last 3 US transactions & they're fast & cheap. Also, no weird suprise brokerage fees.
