Whats the deal with this Honma company? I saw a few clubs on GT's website and the prices are rediculous. Why are they so expensive? Are they worth it?

well, here is their philosophy on clubmaking: http://www.honmagolf.co.jp/english/quality/index01.shtml
Are they worth it? beauty is in the eye of the beholder, i know a couple of guys that have a set of twin mark irons, but I can't ever see myself buying a set unless i won the lotto maybe....

 looks like a set of clubs for 'the golfer that has everything'. someone's buyin' 'em or they wouldn't be makin' 'em.

I guess its more of a status thing. If you have the casdh and want them I see no harm in getting them. I don't think they perform any better than the rest of the brand names companies.

They are the clubs of the rich and famous. Donald Trump uses them.. Presonally I think they look like garbage. Even if I won the lottery I would buy more Titleists !! haaha

seems like this question pops up every so often.
a) japanese golfers are in a whole different price range when it comes to golf clubs. they golf just a few times a year, so their budget on equipment is higher.
b) japanese golfers place a greater value on branding/appearance. it's bling bling like burberry/prada.
c) honmas are like ferraris: greater individual attention is paid to their manufacture. less assembly line, more master craftsman.

pros don't use it....at least not in events..tho i have heard shigeki use it..
i bought a full set for my uncle over ebay just this past summer...
he got obsessed...and i became his personal ebay-er...needless to say, he loved it..its a good club for asians especially because their grips are more slender...so easier to grab with asian's smaller hands

i don't remember..
i didn't buy the whole set together...i bought the irons in one deal, a putter in one deal, two SW in two deals, and various fairway woods in various deals..
and i can't check ebay anymore cause the links to those items are gone now (thru my feedbacks),,
i would say....around 2500-3000 for the ones from ebay...rough guess..tho under 5000 for sure...and most of them are in pretty good condition....not bad considering the normal price for new ones
he also got too impatient and bought a fairway wood from golf town @_@

Yes I agree I think those clubs are designed more for Asians to suit their physial build. Legend says those 5 star Honma's have diamonds on them. I know the richest guy in Hong Kong has them....haha

I was in NYC a few months ago, and a store down there had a set of Honmas on the wall for sale.
Although I didn't like the look so much (not a "player's club"), I did like the feel---even though they did remind me of an incredibly light set of clubs that I had as a kid.
My experience with the clubs was, however, akin to something that you would have seen on an old episode of I Love Lucy. When I put the hideously expensive club back on the rack, I managed to dislodge about 5 other Honma clubs from the rack, sending them all flying across the floor, with the sound of expensive metal clanking throughout the store. Thankfully, there weren't any store employees close by at the time!

3whack, welcome to TGN. good story.
i'm surprised in NYC, they let anyone touch the merchandise ... I think the ones here @ GT are locked up and you need to "Please Ask for Assistance" to touch them. Hope you didn't micro-dent those forgings or the guy who drops $$$ on these won't be too pleased.:)

Thanks.
And, should anyone else be visiting NYC, here is a link to the place. Of course, they may now be banning all clumsy golfers from Toronto.

In some societies you are judged by what you own .. even if you can't break 100 or drive over 150 yards (135 metres) ... as I once witnessed one of these gentleman whiffing a 10º R7 TP with a stiff Fuji shaft .... LOL .. !!!
Most people identify themselves by what they own and proudly proclaim the brand name of their property .... trying to impress others with their ability to buy and own the best. I spend my money on a health club membership for specialized golf-specific workouts together with general conditioning.
My golf equipment is 5 - 10 model years behind ... except my driver, shoes and balls are new. I have tested new equipment but I cannot discern any significant difference to my ancient equipment. Of course I don't begrudge others from spending their money as they please and I even encourage them to buy whatever will keep them happy and relevant.
Somehow I believe the secrets of golf are in the mind and body .... and not only in the equipment.
