View Full Version : New iron thoughts?

It is spring. My ho'mones are raging. I'm thinking about new /alternative irons.
I am currently playing with Ping Eye2 (old, soft loft, square groove). I would never switch from the SW or LW - having tried others, nothing is as forgiving or consistent (for me at least).

I'm mid-cap, and strike my irons firmly with a high ball flight and average distance for an older guy (mid 50's). Shafts in 5-9 irons are graphite between r and A flex. Wedges have ZZ Lite (stiff steel).

What I'm looking for is something different - a new challenge, a new feel, a new trajectory. Better accuracy would be welcome too. Distance on all new shorter irons (6-PW) will increase because of modern lofts. There will be a big gap between PW (modern is 45-47* - Eye2 is 51*).

I'm wondering what recommendations / comments people have. For example, what would give a lower, more penetrating (tour) trajectory - or is that out of the question for a guy with a slow swing speed? What governs the accuracy of an iron?

I'm not ready for a 'blade' or MB.

Would MX23's perform much differently than the Eye2s? Feel different?

How much less forgiving are MP32s than Eye2?

Would forged cavity backs - say Ravens or GS - perform or feel much different than the cast Pings?

Any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks/b

Eye 2 wedges - PW and SW - fit nicely with modern irons as a gap and lob.
I don't play mine anymore because I found the offset got in my way.
Callaway irons might be worth trying out - Nevada Bob's had singles of the x18 pro series (3,4 and 6 irons) for $15. Cheap and easy way to see if you'd like them. I've read that when Eli Callaway was designing his Big Bertha irons, he was judging them against the Ping eye 2's as he thought they were the best performing irons ever made.
The MX-23's look pretty nice - I think they are being discontinued this year so the price may come down. The MX-20's are very similar. Get out to some demo days if you can and also give the Ping i5's a chance.

Just get out and try, you will know when you find what you are looking for. Although you say your swing speed is slow your shaft flex may be too weak, this would cause a high ball flight (as would hundreds of other things).

Just do yourself a favor and get fitted, even if you were fitted for your pings and remember your swing speed and lie angles at that time... get fitted again.. things change!

Good luck on the new purchase ... and when you get your new clubs hit the range before the course and learn your new distances and shot pattern.

cheers
