Seen this happen many times, sometimes I even forget to do it myself....you take a club off the tee and you mis-hit it and it goes slicing out far right or left. If you know what's there, or especially if you don't know what's in the area where your ball is going to land, yell out FORE.

Also make sure to yell it out and not just say it for the sake of saying it. People on the other side need to hear it. I've approached a couple ppl where balls have landed near me and asked them if they yelled out FORE, in which turn they said they did, but I sure didn't hear it and neither did any of my playing partners.

Thanks for the reminder Ego...I know that I guilty of not yelling fore when I should. Maybe it's because I don't have the lungs for it. Or I'm just counting on my fellow playing partners to yell out the warning for me. Either way it's lucky for me that most of the times I don't hit far enough to get onto another fairway!

is it polite to yell 'fore' for someone in your group?
would they be offended that you obviously think their shot is so poor that it might travel so far off target that it might strike someone?

BTW...............You should always yell fore IF it LOOKS like it MIGHT be on line for anyone at all. Also should be yelled IF it's going over trees or trough trees that might end up in another fairway or green or tee (that may not be seen from where you hit).

In our group, we're always watching out for each other just in case. One of my past playing partners got hit in the head with a ball and nobody yelled fore.

Scary as hell. I was a few feet away from him and watched this goose egg grow out of his head in seconds.

Ever since, if one of us is momentarily stunned into silence by a wayward shot, someone in the group will aways scream fore immediately. No offense taken at all. Just the opposite in fact.

I'm not offended by it at all, and I don't think anybody should be. If you hit a bad shot, you know it. Sometimes I get so disgusted with myself that I forget to yell, my buddies do it for me and I'm thankful that they do. I'll do the same for them, or anybody else I'm playing with. Gentleman's game, yes, but it's more gentlemenly to make every possible attempt to make sure everybody on the course leaves in one piece.

I have to say good timing on this thread!;)

I was playing last week with my Bro-in-law - we teed up on a very short par 4 (both of us sitting 5 -10yds from the green) while getting our clubs out of the cart (in the middle of fairway) i was walking to my ball and my B-i-l was getting ready to drive the cart to the path

Well a ball came screaming down hitting the cart roof a mere 6in to a foot away from his head - NO "FORE" OR ANYTHING FROM THE GROUP ON THE TEE!

INSTEAD WE HEARD "NICE LONG DRIVE" & HOLY THAT WAS A BOMB!

Giving them the wave like what the hell? (still no "sorry")

Sitting on the next tee block (very near the green they were driving up to) we asked them why they didn't yell "fore" or say "sorry" - one guy says "no speak english"
Yea bull@#$%!
We told them if it happens again we're gonna crack a club over their head - same guy who says "no speak english" turns around and says in perfect english - well i'll have you arrested!
Jack@!! like that shouldn't be allowed on the course!
We never saw a ball anywhere near us after that

I have forgotten to say fore at times as well, often cause I'm just so bummed that I hit the weak shot that caused the need for one to yell FORE! With that said, I think it's really helpful to have a playing partner yell fore on one's behalf. Certainly we do this amongst one of my regular groups. As we all note, it is important to yell it, however it is easy to forget when lost in the disgrace of the bad shot, so therefore even more important that you're playing partners yell for you! :)

Too bad for him. Everybody hits some bad shots. Yelling "fore" could prevent them from killing somebody, which is much more important than his feelings.
