View Full Version : Using the Fairway Wood

I've always been asked why I don't carry a 3 wood or use my 5 wood. Quite simply, I'm not confident using it off the tee or in the fairway. I tend to hook my 5 wood. I can be 220 to the green but I'll still opt to use my 3 iron. Fairway woods are supposed to be easier to hit than irons cause they catch less grass and reduce your chance of hitting too much ground and duffing the ball. Anyone got tips on how to use my fairway wood?

if you're comfortable using long irons, then I might suggest switching to hybrids for longer distances than a 3-iron.....they use the same swing as long-iron but are easier to get airborne and of course easy to get the desired distance because of the larger club head.....hybrids do also have the same characteristics of fairway woods...i.e. cutting through the grass in the rough...

I find that if I use my woods on the fairway, I don't hit it as consistently. I do much better using woods in tougher spots... the rough or nastier lies

usually people use their irons in the rough and not their woods...but it's all personal preferences...

I would have to say differently Mok, woods are not only designed to be easier to hit but easier to hit in the rough. Reason being the club head of a wood is designed to go through thick or deep rough without getting caught by blades of grass. Therefore, most people will use a wood in the rough rather than irons. Irons club heads are more difficult to plow through grass. You are more likely to slice your shot using an iron in the rough than a wood.
