  • Putting grips on with air compressor

I just put new grips on my clubs with an air compressor. No tape and no solvent. Just rubbed the shaft with a little soapy water, started the grip on the shaft, put the compressor nipple into the hole on the end, applied gentle air pressure, and voila. It bubbled and farted itself right on.

Was it ever easy!! I should have tried this ten years ago!!

    Live and learn.

I've been doing my own grips this way for a few years now. Really fast and easy.
I like to try different feeling grips (thats why I love Golftown's Annual grip sale) and I hate destroying grips the old way when I can re-use them.

Will any air compressor do just fine? Any recommendation on the amount of pressure needed to throw the grips on?

Most any compressor will do to pop them on. I find about 40-50 psi does the trick depending on the grip.

I have been doing grips with the compressor for a while too. It is great! Never had a problem with slipping or twisting, and nice and clean install.

Question: If I like to put additional wraps of tape then the compressor way is a no go?

you should be able to do additional build up wraps with no problem. I once even used some duct tape lol

Re: Putting grips on with air compressor

i have tried this method, and experienced the grips slipping from the club over a number of swings. Works great on a putter though.

Tried putting a layer of masking tape as many suggest, no help.

Ended up getting a roll of grip tape and doing it the old fashion way.

I've also had slipping issues and have since gone back to tape and solvent.
The advantage of the compressor method is ease of removal when you're experimenting with the type of grip or underwraps ... but once you've got things dialed in, you might as well make it permanent.

Interesting regarding the slippage (I've never had that issue). I don't understand why going back to solvent would make it better as the purpose of the solvent is to help the grip slip over the tape (same as the air). The solvent doesn't improve grip.

Since you're using double sided tape and solvent, I believe the solvent evaporates and the adhesive nature of the tape returns.

That's why you only have a couple minutes, if that, during which you can adjust the grip.

The adhesive nature of the tape will prevent the twisting.

Without tape/solvent, using the air method, the grip slides on over the metal shaft, the air provides enough space between the two allowing you to move it on to the shaft. But as soon as you stop the air flow the rubber of the grip touches the metal and prevents it from moving.

So rubber against metal will have have more possibility to "twist/slip" than rubber-tape and tape-metal.

Especially if you blow on a 0.600 grip on to a 0.580 shaft.

Guys, you got to keep in mind that some grips are to thin or light to use air only. Grips like tour velvets are generally thinner material and will require tape.

Check out Pure grips or Star grips.

Even when I use tape I still use the compressor. I just give a small skirt in the grip and the blow it on in the usual manner. No Mess no fuss . The compressor blow the small amount of solution across the tape to activate it and all is good.
