  • Intimidation or just poor ball striking

My home course is Station Creek, where on the North my best round has been a 78, last 5 games have been 82-83 & my worst has been a 92 this year.

Does any one have a course or playing partner that you just can't score well on/with? Today I played with my dad and I shot a 108. I was pi55ed, only had 3 holes in the proper fairway (other then the 3 pars which where all pars and 1 birdie).

I was chalking it up to just a bad day, but when I got home I went through cards from this year & last and realized, whenever I play with my dad I have never scored less then a 95.

As far as courses are concerned I’ve also noticed on Pheasant Run I just can’t score well?

Is this possible do I try too hard to over perform?

Chris, it could be a number of things. It could be the intimidation thing with certain courses/people. Your mind is a funny thing. Even if you KNOW you should beat that person or score well on that course, your subconscious just may be getting in the way.
Also, with respect to certain courses, you may be trying to overpower a course rather than playing it the way it was designed. Could be a lot of stuff.

I too used to have "performance issues"....to bad there isn't a VIagra pill for that!

Seriously I too used to not play well in front of my father, and then when I started playing in tournaments I would also get all worried about the other people I played with and spent more time worrying about what they were doing and not paying enough attention to my game.

At this point I was a decent single digit player, but would go to GAO events and shoot 95. I have only being playing in competitive amatuer events for 5 years, but with experience and a couple of book on the mental side of the game, and really dedicating myself to course management....that is REALLY important I now no longer have "1st tee gitters" and can just get to the business of playing the game, just like everyone else I am playing with. I am still anxious and do get nervous, but I now realize this is normal and you just have to play your way through it. You can still be friendly and cordial and be an encouraging playing partner by saying "nice shot" when the guy hits a good shot, but over time and experience you "learn" how to play competitvie golf.

Not that I'm burning anything up in my events, but for me if I can keep it under 80 it is a decent showing more or less. I think every event I play I am getting close to what I feel is my potential which is 75ish.

Today for example I had an 80. NO birds, but good ball striking and decent stats, although it was 19 putts on the back. I missed in and around a half dozen putts, which even at half would have given me a 77.

Still though, on 18 I played smart and didn't try to carry it over the water 220 to the green, so tried to lay up with my hybrid and pulled it in the f'ing water anyway. I grinded out the next shot and hit a gap wedge to 15 feet...missed the par putt. SO 80 was my score, but I felt like I played well.

Sorry to rant on about my game etc, but just trying to point out that what is happening to you is common. Tiger once said that he thought he was going to puke on the 1st tee of his first US Open, so there you go.

Just try to focus on your target and blank out everything else. This is what Hogan had to do in order to play the way he did. The golf shot only takes in and around 30 seconds including your consistent repetitive pre-shot routine (if you don't have one.....get one !) you have a good couple minutes to socialize after the shot.

Try that next time you play.

I play bad all the time with strangers, went out today with a few guys I didn't know and just wasn't comfortable and hit some really bad shots, fat into a bunker 50 yrds away and then fat out of the bunker.

It's no reflection on the guys I was playing with but I just get into a mood sometimes with strangers and don't focus at all, sounds really stupid but I play my worst golf with people I don't know and most of the time play my better golf with friends

It's all in the head and the mind tends to do funny things to you, this is the only game I have a hard time playing with strangers, I think it's a confidence thing most of the time with me and it's so silly but I just can't relax sometimes, I guess we are all a little shy of screwing up in front of people we don't know...............

Re: Intimidation or just poor ball striking

          It's Father's Day!!

The day I beat my Dad was one of the happiest days of my life. He always intimidated me. He hit it longer than me off the tee, chipped and putted better than me and never lost his cool. I could tell that he got great enjoyment out of watching me squirm. To my surprise he was also very proud of me the day I beat him by one stroke. I shot 81. He bought me a beer and told everyone in the clubhouse at Dundas Valley that his son had finally got the best of him. That was quite a few years ago and now I can hit it way past him off the tee and I'm usually closer to pin on my approach shots. But, he still has a good short game and still knows how to rattle me. He turned 65 this year and I love playing with him and feel proud of him if he can beat me.

I've lived in Japan for the past 12 years and don't get home as often as I'd like. I realize that I may not have that many more chances to play with my old man. I plan to play a few rounds with him next month when I come home for a holiday.

Perhaps if you look at playing with your dad in a different light, you'll have more success and, more importantly, you'll savor it regardless of whether you beat him or not. It's so easy to take your Dad for granted.

When I go as a single I try to assess who I get paired up with on the 1st tee. If I get a bad feeling I try a little harder to be extra social in between shots. Even the biggest idiots in the world should be quiet and allow you to hit your shot.

Maybe if you find yourself in that scenario again try taking the pressure off yourself by announcing your handicap on the 1st tee. Foretold is forewarned!
