It would have been more effective if he had spoken out about it when he was still playing. I overheard him swearing at a Tour Official about the course conditions at Glen Abbey during the Open a decade or so back. Now his recollection of past events seems fuzzy about bad behaviour.

He might be right, might not be, who knows. But a sense of bitterness is what I get from him.

Really good to hear a former tour pro speak out about this. As he stated, he saw it while he was playing. He saw it on a more gander scale when he was working for the Golf Channel. Most not all of the pro's now travel from tournament to tournement on private jets, jump into chauffeur driven cars and are driven to swank hotels or private homes and then to the tournaments. They never see the real world. The PGA tour should do something about it, but the independant contractors (see PGA pro) will have none of it. Maybe they should learn from the NHL. They made it mandatory that players maned to the Allstar teams attend the event. If not, the are suspended. Sidney Crosby showed up even though he was injured.

Of course he is right, ask a school teacher or government worker how the economy is affecting them, they don't have a click, they just see great deals everywhere.

The NHL is a poorly run professional sport, no one should be taking a cue from them. As for the players being spoiled, congrats, he's just bitter that he was an ok player with 2 victories and didn't get the attention they get now. Bitter is all I see from him, and not a fan of his.

The players are just that, independent contractors, they work for themselves, no one else. If you think somehow a person who makes a lot of money doesn't want to enjoy better things in life, give your head a shake!

I think the PGA should have a look at how Supercross(dirt bike racing) riders interact with the fans. They have autograph signings at every race. They sign nice posters supplied by the motorcycle manufactures. It would be pretty easy for Ping, Taylor Made etc to set it up where you could get a nice shot of you favourite player on a poster advertising the lastest driver, irons and such. That way the pros would not be hounded on the course. Just a thought....

I wouldn't say the majority of PGA players travel this way, although the top 25 on the $ list probably do. What exactly can the PGA do about this, they have no say in how someone lives their life off the course. Finchem can't do squat about TIger's off course antics (just using that as an example....not to crap on Tiger or thread jack) so what can he do about the fact some of the players charter private jets and stay in expensive hotels?

This is more of a problem with the ridiculous purses out there now. As I have said in the past it took Jack Nicklaus over 10 years to earn a million dollars playing golf......regardless of the worth of money, you can't compare that to current days where you can earn that in 1 tournament. You don't even have to win anymore to live a comfortable life. You can make half a million $ per year just by finishing in the top 10. No small feat I agree, but maybe this is why these young guys who turn pro with perfect golf swings can't win......they don't HAVE to.

Like Trevino said when asked what it was like playing and winning the US Open under pressure etc and he answered......"pressure is playing for $100 with no money in your pocket".

In the "good ol' days" you had to win once in a while just to stay alive out there, now just like all sports they are a bunch of high priced panzies who don't know how to win when it counts.

Wrong. Maybe the top 20-30 in the world do that, plus maybe a few older guys who have made their money.

Re: Andrew Magee criticizes Tour players for sense of entitlement

If you are one of the top 200 people in the world at a skill, you are very likely to be rewarded for it. To paraphrase David Dingwall, they're entitled to their entitlements. There is no point for older players to get bitter that the purses were smaller 15 years go.

Many professional athletes live in a bubble. It could be due to the time and dedication needed. It could be that there is a predisposition towards focussing upon oneself that often goes hand-in-hand with becoming an elite athlete.

And for many golfers, the situation is exacerbated by having spent their lives, including their formative years, sheltered on a golf course, away from reality.

And it is evident when one reads or hears the personal profile of most golfers---their interests are inevitably superficial and lacking an appreciation or interest in "real world issues".

And isn't Magee somewhat hypocritical on this topic? While he may not feel entitled any longer, he still lives in his own bubble of golf, having drinks with McCord, and watching American Idol.

Hardly a thinking man or a renaissance man, I would say.
