  • What date works for the Canadian Open?

Lots of comments about the date of the Canadian Open. I would like to hear some ideas of dates that would ensure better fields for our National Championship..

My question to all the experts is when would you like the Canadian Open held and what event should the PGA Tour bump??

    Screwed regardless.

April - too early in the season
May - battle with Memorial, Player's
June - US Open, (can probably see if they can fight with Quail Hollow)
July - we see what happens here
Aug - didn't they try this before? WGC event in there somewhere to
Sept - Playoffs, Ryder / Prez cup?

Two possibilities really. One would be the week before the US Open. Lots of players might be interested in playing the week before a major. Especially if it is close to the US Open site or is at least a very similar type of course. The second option might be to see if it could be part of the FedEx Cup. I think this is really unlikely as it would not allow for Canadian Pros to be part of the mix.

It really is a difficult situation for Golf Canada to fix. Ultimately RBC needs to throw around some of its weight & force the tour to give the Open a better date that it needs to attract the top players. RBC is second only to FedEx in the tour sponsors so they should be able to put some pressure on the tour. With big sponsors being so hard to find perhaps the tour would give them a better date rather than losing RBC's $$$.

Im not sure being sandwhiched between the Memorial and the US Open is a great spot but it has some possibility in terms of marketing.

Week before US Open you'll get a Euro Tour field with alot of the bigger names... like Westwood, McDowell, McIlroy and so on.

A June date before the U.S. Open is too early for a Canadian Open.

There is the very real possibility that the course could not be in shape.

A harsh winter and a crappy spring could prevent good turf conditions.

Why not just move the British Open?

I disagree, any PRIVATE track worth its salt would be ready!!

For sure the date MUST be before the final Major, 'cause as we know all-to-well, that's when the Big Names pack it in!

Re: What date works for the Canadian Open?

The two dates that would be best are probably:

                  - the current date of the AT&T National (ie: two weeks after the US Open and two weeks before the British Open)
                  - the current date of the Greenbrier Classic (ie: two weeks after the Bristish Open and two weeks before the PGA Championship)

But even these dates aren't perfect............the AT&T had a large purse and was played on a great golf course and it got a very poor field............meanwhile there is a WGC event between Greenbrier and the PGA Championship so getting the top players to play 3 weeks in a row would be a challenge, especially with several FedEx Cup events coming up soon

Re: What date works for the Canadian Open?

you want a date before any of the other majors are played so it becomes a tune-up not to be missed. You don't ever want it anytime right after The Open because it's a letdown period for the majority of the players.

get those WGC events canceled and then we can talk

Great idea! It's not likely to inconvenience any private club members. Most of the complainers would have already packed it in for the year. Congratulations, Onin3. That's thinking outside the box.

It's not chilly, it's brisk. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Thank You, just remember where you heard it first.
That being said it will be brisk and keeping with the worlds perception of our climate.
Weather wise its been a bomb in July so far the last 3 years, with this year being the best- but still wet one day. October is sure to be a winner.

Lots of rumours that the Fed Ex Cup biz will be over. It is expensive, not doing what the tour hoped and making their championship and the WGC events less than desirable. Plus the post tournies are made almost irrelavent. Once out of the way, the arrangement makes all tournaments stronger with a drive to be in the top 125 and the championships more important. Hope it happens. Artificial hype.
