  • My honest Modern Golf Fitting Review...

I am simply going to state the truth about my experience...I have both positive and negative things to say, but all simply the truth as I am well aware that they are a sponsor. I have read only positive posts on here and will definitely mention my positives as well.

I went to get fitted, extremely excited! Whole bag fitting so we all know the price, pretty expensive and some would argue well worth it. Here is the coles notes version of my entire experience.
I walk in and am extremely impressed with the facility and the lovely girl at the front desk. Meet some guys and they take my irons to spec them out. I wait for a bit, not really sure what to do with myself as they have my bag, so I hit some putts.

The guy who fit me, I did like, but I think he mistook my niceness and casualness as I am not serious and just want to hit some toys sort of. We had a good rapport and I will definitely not call him out on a public forum (maybe he was sick or having a bad day, or he truly felt my numbers couldn't get any better, but for $450 I want to be the judge of that). He did casually mention three separate times about coming back and finishing up another time, but I really didn't want to do that, but I was feeling that he really wasn't interested in being there anymore so we did end up cutting it short.

Fitting summary for my whole bag fitting:
I only hit my own putter, didn't even get another putter put in my hands and the machine with the camera thing was broken as well. Only got my putter adjusted so it rolled more true on the putting board, end of putter fitting (total of about 15 putts with my own putter only)
Iron fitting - yes, they said they were impressed with my irons and the build, but I wanted to try a bunch of combinations of shafts and heads. I literally hit ONE other combination. One different head and one different shaft, that is it, with all of those options that is what I received. I hit my own irons and of course they tweaked them, but I only got to compare my numbers to one other combination.

Driver fitting - I was somewhat ok with, but I only hit the SLDR and X2, plus my own with three different shaft combinations. I saw the numbers and wasn't that impressed so I asked him about a different shaft that I knew was good for me and was surprised that he didn't suggest it. Bingo, the driver shaft that I suggested was the best fit.

3 wood - only hit my own two and two different shafts

hybrid - only hit my own (he suggested I come back to finish up)

I then waited for my data and numbers online for four days until I received them.

The big kicker in the end was the price of the driver he suggested and I spoke directly with a Taylormade rep about this at my golf course. The SLDR he was going to build me was Upwards of $1200 but if I ordered the driver through Taylormade the shaft upgrade is $100. Quite a bit of a price difference.

All in all, was it a cool experience, yes, did I like my fitter? Yes. Do I feel I got my money's worth? For the driver fitting, good enough, but no in every other area. I am happy they tweaked my irons so they fit me better 100%. In the end, happy with the driver fitting, but not the rest of the bag.

Any feedback is welcomed on this post as well.

^^ You're missing the part where you told them you weren't happy with the fitting and what their response was. Kind of an important detail to omit.

I'm far from a MG deciple, but let's be fair here.

You're probably like me who have experimented enough even just trial and error and have good grasp of what works and what doesn't.

Basically your experience is similar to my Ping fitting earlier in the year. I hit my own irons for the most part, got decent dispersions and trajectory within the optimal bracket. I know a little upright is ok for me but black dot gave more than acceptable results so I opted to keep black code.

Hit i25 driver quite well but results were similar to my on course performance from other drivers.

I didn't get to try a whack load of stuff (after all it was hitting indoor to a net anyways) but I take the experience as a positive one as it reinforced and consolidated all these years or hoing and trying were not in vain as it got me fairly close to my specs.

Had I paid big $$ for the fitting, my expectations might well be very different and I might expect more than you actually - which is not necessarily for the good. Now, I can rest the case and play golf.

Bummer to read that. Been toying with the idea of booking an iron fitting.

I don't want to take away from the many positive reviews on here, I would still go (for a one item fitting) if I was toying with the idea and I am going to chalk it up to a fairly isloated incident. I just wouldn't do a whole bag fitting in one day as even the fitter may get tired. I would just stick to irons for an hour and it will probably be worth it. I definitely didn't get my money's worth but it seems a lot of people on here have.

To be honest with you, I never said a thing. I felt myself making excuses for the fitter and trying to give him the benefit of the doubt that everything he did was right. It wasn't until I actually read what I wrote over again that I really should have said something. You're right, I never gave them a chance to make it right in my opinion.

To add to honesty I have had similar experiences - Ive had 4 separate fittings with 3 different people - my best experiences were when they first opened and were not crazy busy - I had Ian both times (Before the Upcharge) My last two were extremely lousy.... Situation was identical to yours.

This post saved me a LOT OF MONEY & TIME, but I'd still like to get fitted ONE DAY
Every great idea starts out as a blasphemy

Well I've heard it from a few people that we've been paired up with on the course lately as well, so in my view it seems like it's not out of the norm at all.

Eagle Ridge could quite possibly be the most underrated Clublink course. Absolutely love it.

Really eh? I thought I was the only one. I do guess it is hard for people to admit to a $400-$500 bad investment, I know that is how I was at first when my buddies asked me about it.

Since were being honest, I'd like to start by saying this is the first post I've read with someone being upset with their fitting experience at MG, I've been fitted there 2 times in the last two years and both times all the guys were great and all had incredible knowledge and expertise in what their doing. MG doesn't even compare to other fitting facilities and it is far beyond many other or any other fitting experience in the GTA and if not Canada. Did I mention I would never let anyone touch my clubs besides modern golf, both Jeff and another employee In the back do a get job making sure everyone's clubs are always done perfectly and in a timely manor as they are extremely busy with only a select few who can do the building process. Don't let this post take away from those thinking about going to MG, it is a great experience and I wouldn't change or go anywhere else . GO MG!

why does someone's review need to be turned into a sales pitch by another member? every MG thread turns into sales pitches from other members, especially if someone wasn't satisfied, people feel the need to defend this place to all ends.

I have no sympathy for those who pay for a service and are unhappy, and choose to vent about it instead of addressing the concern(s) first. It's like buying a custom suit and having it not fit properly when you pick it up, only to leave the store unhappy and go b1tch about the poor service to friends and family without giving the establishment a chance to make things right.

Your fitting experience may have been sub-par, but the complaint holds little value as you did nothing to address the problem. If you had brought these concerns to the attention of someone at MG and they basically told you to have a nice day, then I'd side more with you. And yes I know everyone at MG very well, but I'm also a customer and when I pay for a service I expect to get what I pay for, or I'll speak up.

Yes, OP should speak up with MG, but I appreciate the review on this board. Good information to weight when deciding to spend $$$ on a fitting.
