Has anyone (who isn't playing this morning) seen this article?

Overbuilt and struggling with some alarming demographic shifts, the future of one of Canadian's favourite games faces serious challenges

Just yesterday I took my 14 year old to Westview. I asked at the pro shop if there was a Jr. rate. There wasn't. I think courses need to consider this.

On a side note, the course was virtually empty. It was nice for us, no pressure from behind at all. I found it unusual at Westview though. It's usually packed there.

From the article, "[A] Canadian study found that fewer than 10% of golfers had a child who also plays the game."

That's a scary statistic. I happen to fall into that category. I have one son, he has never hit a golf ball (despite my attempts to get him involved) and has no interest in doing so.

Where is the next generation of golfers coming from? Is there a next generation of golfers?

A few years ago, before my son (now 12) and I joined a private club and were playing public golf, I would ONLY play courses with a junior rate. Eagles Nest, Copper Creek, Osprey Valley, Silver Lakes, etc. got my money. Places like Angus Glen and Westview didn't get dime.

If the trend stays with us another year or so golf will return to its former elite state of the Have's and the HalfNuts.

Where are courses with Junior rates listed, I checked Silver Lakes because it's close, but no mention on their site about Junior rates.
There was the Take a Kid Week but that was at a lot of courses but for only a week.

I caught up and joined a couple of kids a few days ago at Huntsville Downs (one 18 the other 15-16). One was a member --- and he said the only junior member at the course as far as they were aware.

My 1st question would be "what has been the percentage historically?" If it has been (for example) 30%, then I'm concerned, but if it was 12% I'm not. Golf went through a boom in the early 2000's, in part due to Tiger's influence.
With his relative lack of success in the last 5 years, it is not unusual to see the cycle take a turn. On top of that the economy has been in the tank since 2008. I have several clients experiencing similar problems that are facing the golf industry. One client told me last year " I am so used to seeing my sales climb every year, now they aren't increasing and I don't know what to do. I have to learn how to actually manage the business and look at my expenses".
I spend a lot of my time working with business clients on their spending & managing cash flow; it is a new and often unpleasant experience for them. Tough decisions have to be made. The golf industry is no different.
It's an economic culling of the heard.
