  • 2 man best ball

Today my father in law and I decided to play best ball at Tarandowah. He usually shoots around 100 there and I shoot in the mid 80's. I thought this would be a fun way for him to feel better about a round out there. It was actually a lot of fun. I've only ever played best ball in a 4 man best ball tournament. I don't usually enjoy those too much because 4 shots from the same spot is a bit too ridiculous for my liking.

We agreed that we would take 9 of my tee shots and 9 of his. We finished with a 6 over 76 and he left the course feeling a lot less beat up than usual. Does anyone else do this when playing with a golfer who usually shoots 15 or so strokes higher than you?

Don't do it for the same reason, but we have had rounds where as a 4some on the eve of our usual annual scrambles we go out and play scramble golf to tune up.

Usually let's us relax, try to pound bombs etc, and we try as much as we can to get out on the same course the day before if we can help it.

I am a low 80's golfer gifted with a fairly long tee distance but not so great GIR and 1putt game. In scramble format I don't hit the lay up so much as we let my dad do so and he usually pegs fairway for us to bomb squad. Collectively we can all have our fun. My dad loves playing from our tee shot distance cause finally his 9 and PW get some repetition instead of 3hybrid-7 irons as approach shots.

The damn putting always seems to stump us all....

    It is a fun switch.

Alternatively, we have also had 2 vs 2 in a scramble format as a foursome before with fun success. Stroke play can get so boring.

Sounds like scramble rather than best ball.

        Yes it does.

From my perspective best ball is both players play the hole on individual ball and best score of the 2 gets recorded for the team.

My Arizona group plays 2 best ball events on the week off 75% handicaps, fun format.

76 based on your caps is something to feel very good about. Well done!

You were actually playing a scramble, not 'best ball' aka 'better ball'. Best ball is where each player on a team plays his own ball, and the best (net) score among them on each hole is the score for the team.

Wouldn't want you to sign up for a real 'better ball' tournament and then find out too late that it was not a scramble.

Haha thanks for pointing that out, I guess I've heard it referred to as best ball so I wasn't using the right name for it. I guess 2 man scramble is what we played. Either way it was fun!

Thanks, he's not the best off the tee so I thought a 76 using 9 of his tee shots was pretty decent.

Good round and it seems like you had lots of fun. It also help keep the round going.
If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.

we had 8 guys go out from out ball team.. some good, some bad golfers.. we played a scramble drive.. everyone played the best drive and then there own ball from there.. was good for the bad golfer and the good golfer who missed it once and a while.
