  • Riverstone Golf and Country Club Closing??

So Rumor has it Riverstone Golf and Country Club is closing. Very disappointing loss for the community and the loyal supporters of the club and course.

Apparently the city of Brampton was considering purchasing it but met a lot of resistance.

I was really hoping for clublink or kaneff to buy it build the back nine. You know a build it and they will come situation.

I guess we will see in the coming weeks/months.

      So, I guess the 2nd 9 isn't happening either!?

Liked the course, but didn't play it this year.

That 1st hole is a tough drive!

I know...I wonder if this is a sign of the declining interest in golf?

Sorry to say but it could be the cultural tastes of that area of Brampton.

Agreed, but not much room to add a cricket pitch

Have you ever considered the fact that golf is seen as a middle class, middle aged white rich sport that can be seen as intimidating to multicultural people?

It's easy to poke fun that us Indians would rather be playing cricket but as a fellow golf nut, I love the sport but usually I'm the only non white person on most courses when I play and I'm always met with a stare or two, but I really don't care because I love this sport and the greens can't see what colour I am when I hit my birdies.

Riverstone may be the first course to suffer because of its immediate constituents but it won't be the last as Canada becomes more multicultural most other areas will start seeing the decline as well, so in my opinion the sport needs to make it more appealing and non intimidating to take up or this trend will be a long term one.

I just want to preface that I'm not trying to be difficult or insult anyone or any group out there but just trying to shed some light on us 'cricket players'.

fwiw, I learned to play cricket LONG before I played golf or even baseball.
...and my boss is Indian, not much into cricket (prefers rugby), and plays a ton of golf!

Fwiw, I'm born here so I don't even understand the rules of cricket. But I just thought I should reply to your post because of the way it read, but it's all good my friend.

I'm not on this site to discuss social issues, but one only needs to reference Tiger Woods and the difficulties he faced due to racism/elitism in the sport and which I still feel exists every time I step on to the course, and I know a lot of people who won't even take up the game because they don't want to feel that feeling of being out of place.

Anyways, that won't stop me and can't wait to get out again on Monday before it starts getting really cold.

I only recently became a golf nut and haven't golfed in the fall does anyone have any basic tips that I need to know for fall golf?

Sad about this. Always well conditioned. It's a fun challenging 9 holes. The par 3s just needed to be a bit longer.

wear a toque, keep three balls warm/handy in your pant pocket, play soft low compression balls, wear mittens and don't play before 9am.

Fascinating response and it didnt take long or much for 'cultural tastes'to come up. perhaps it's less of a cultural taste and more of an issue with golfs overall decline. Perhaps it's due to the land values. I wonder if Castlemore, or hunters glen closed due to 'cultural tastes' or sheer economics of the industry and decline of golf? How much did cultural tastes affect the sale of saw whet? White oaks or the driving ranges in Oakville? I guess it's easier to stereotype when it's in Brampton and not Oakville.

Thanks for the tips ! I didn't even think about the impact a cold ball could have on the game.

A warm but not constricting pullover is essential for me. I've tried all kinds of warm clothes as I golf as long as the course is open. I found a great pullover that I can move pretty well in. That has helped my play a lot in cold weather.
