the cruel joke is, her life choices weren't Poster material for the feminists. They also didn't think she weren't intellectual enough to push the fight.

I guess it is an equally cruel joke that the anti-abortion types shunned her as well because she wasn't poster material.

well that came a little later after the Roe vs Wade ruling was passed and gave women the right to a self-determine abortion.
Her life style was so effed up that neither side wanted her as spokesperson.
Point is the pro-abortionist got the most out of her, and gave her zip recognition through that time.
She would have remained as that woman behind the curtain until
she had a change of heart and crossed over to the other side of the debate.
It was only then that she became known as the woman behind that famous ruling.

As I read this profile, I felt sorry for Ms. McCorvey. Hers was a very tough life that was not softened by her role, minimal as it was, in Roe v. Wade.
This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

Minimal yes, but without her, surely the lawyers, would have had a lot more work on their hands to have succeeded in getting the law changed.

You're absolutely right. When I spoke of her involvement as "minimal," I simply meant that she was, unlike most parties to litigation, not particularly active in the litigation. Beyond signing the affidavit, she does not appear to have done anything else.

what struck me is the peculiar choice for her cover name, "Jane Roe" ergo Plain-Jane Roe.

Re: RIP The WOMEN who NEVER WAS?

This article states that "Doe," "Roe," and "Poe" are placeholder names for individuals wishing to remain anonymous in litigation. Your theory is much more interesting.

Norma McCorvey, better known as "Jane Roe" from the landmark Supreme Court Case Roe v. Wade, passed away today at age 69. McCorvey was an enigmatic person, to say the least — she went from the plaintiff in the famous court case that established a…

Re: RIP The WOMEN who NEVER WAS?

From the courts to the morgue, if the government doesn't know someone's name or wants to withhold it, they give them one of these as a placeholder. Why?

so as Jane Roe she was just a "Tag," never obligated at any time to be a physical presence in court.

In most precedent setting cases that get to the Supreme Court level, the individual litigant can play a nominal role. The looming precedent has broad impact upon many people. So in a case like this one or the one about Miranda rights, it is basically a test case and various intervenors and interest groups are driving the end result. This is especially so in cases that concern the individual against the state

After Canada had the Charter introduced there was the "Charter Challenge" system which I believe helped expedite test cases through to the SCC to flesh out the law.

Many SCC cases concern a relatively modest set of facts that have huge importance in their application. It is more about the precedent than the participants.
