  • Justin Thomas Spike Mark

Anyone see this guy bashing the green a foot from the cup after he missed his 3 footer on 12 I believe? The camera cut out very quick but you can see Thomas smashing a spike mark with frustration. You could almost here a 'thud' each time he hit the ground. After almost hitting a fan while dropping club and now this? I realize they are the last group but still, setting a poor example and making himself look like a sap. Guy should take some lessons from DJ...

It was bad form for sure. Could lead to a fine, especially after the multiple club releases.

Agreed, I saw it and couldn't believe it. Not a classy move.

We only think it was a spike mark. You don't think a pro is going to take blame missing a short putt are they?? Bad form and bad taste, but fines mean very little when you make millions.

He showed a little emotion oh no; that's the problem with sports today they lost identity look at the NFL as a prime example they can't celebrate without a fine; there's always some guys complaining about a player showing emotion, clearly you've never played high level sports or you'd understand.

I don't mind showing emotion .. in fact I encourage players to; get mad, break THEIR OWN clubs, skip clubs in the water, throw sissy fits what have you. What I have a problem is taking it out on the golf course. Shows zero class. Makesme of a rich kid playing under daddy's county club membership who thinks he's better than he is. Total disrespect for the course. A pro who does this for a living act more proper than that. And my response to your 'high level athlete' comment is to get off your high horse Mr. Athlete.....

Celebrating and being a suck are two very different things. Yet they are both expressions of emotions, professionals are paid a lot of money to keep things in check at all times regardles of which side of the spectrum theyre on. The problem in the NFL is they can't differentiate between celebrating properly and rubbing it in someone's face which is poor sportsmanship. The guys on tour need to understand that there's a camera on them all day and throwing your club is just wrong. Slamming your club like Rory and Justin did today really shows that theyre over paid babies when they're not winning.....my 2 cents

When he dropped / flung his driver it came very close to a couple kids on the ropes. He quickly hurried over to retrieve it. I'm glad the announcers called him out on it.

Also, the way he was pounding the spike mark or tuft of grass so close to the hole, that surely could cause harm to the surface for the next golfers coming through ( he was in the last group so no one coming through later ).

Agreed, not pretty to see! Most of us have been there one day or the other (I know I have sadly and felt awful), but he didn't seem to feel bad or really care which is what I didn't like.

When your in the moment your in the moment, what he did wasn't a big deal; blown out of proportion for sure.

And I'm not on any horse I've just played other sports and understand the emotions envolved, missing putt for 95 is a little different then having a PGA tournament on the line

Regardless he is a professional. He's getting paid by multiple corporations very hefty salaries to represent their brand not to mention the respect the PGA expects and requires from him. Where do you draw the line between what's acceptable or not. Should his club had struck a person or damaged property can we just say he was in the heat of the moment ? why not throw the flagstick like a javelin so Happy'esc when upset after a bad hole ? Gimme a break ..

take some lessons from DJ? I love DJ and all but lets not forget the guy has a criminal past and a questionable suspension so when you're asking who would be a better example for people you might want to come up with better role models.
The way Justin hit the ground with his putter, it didn't do any damage. Definitely no worse than 200lbs in metal spikes. His club throw was a poor choice and he knew it right away. Its not like he hurled it into the crowd on his follow through.
Just because he's getting paid millions to play a game at an elite level, doesnt mean he has to behave a certain way or change who he is. If you dont like it... I'm sure he wont mind. Its bad enough our society is becoming offended with ever single move, word that someone says. If he stuck the toe of his putter into the ground or took a divot out of the green... you might have some argeement here. But what he did was nothing. You can hit the ground pretty damn hard with the sole of your putter without damaging the green.

No doubt DJ has made some poor decisions in the past, but he's clearly got his head on straight now. He has matured and concentrated on the right priorities, on and off the course, and it's showing in his results.
Hopefully JT will do the same, because he's one heck of a talent. He knew right away (when he saw his club bounce towards the crowd) that he did something wrong. Slamming the greens is something a lot of guys have done (Billy Horschel at US Open), but don't think he should get a pass just because he was in the last group on the last day.
All of these are little things (that, yes, set a bad example) - not a huge deal but shouldn't be swept under the rug either. PGA Tour should speak to him (fine him if they want) then move on.

You should never, ever, ever harm or disrespect the course. Pretty much, or should be, the 1st thing all of us learn when starting out. Pathetic etiquette on his part.

I bet he wipes his hair with his right hand before shaking hands too.
