Just received my job offer .... going to be a Police Officer. What a process, almost a year invested into the application process. Do I have to change my handle now....... lol

I am really excited to finally get the call, as this has been a dream of mine for such a long time. Being a medic in the forces was originally supposed to be a 3 year plan....that turned into 12 years. Originally used as a stepping stone for a career in Policing.

I think my experience as a medic in the forces, and working civ ambulance will be very beneficial as a LEO. Very thankful for my time in the current trade.

Although I am excited to start my new job, I am really sad about stepping away from 12 years of hard work. I have put a lot on my career up until this point. Getting to serve as a medic and be called "doc" was a great honour while deployed.

For those who have done career changes after 12 years in a profession, and later in life ...any advice?

I have no advice. If this is what you want, things will work out.

    Congratulations.

Congratulations. Canadians can always use another good police officer.

As for changing careers, I offer the following advice based on moving from 12+ years of private practice to working as a federal prosecutor:

1). Accept the fact that you'll be nervous about leaving a position that you knew well for one with which you are not familiar.

2). Your unease will pass as you become more comfortable with your new job and your new environment.

3). Savour the transition. You're blazing a new path. Enjoy the adventure.

4). Remember to look to your fellow officers for assistance or guidance, if you need help. Don't let pride prevent you from reaching out.

5). At times, you may feel like a fish out of water. Don't worry about it. That's not unusual when starting a new career. The feeling will pass in time.

6). Finally, have fun. Yes, yours will be demanding and serious work, but remember to keep smiling, something which you already learned, no doubt, as a combat medic.
This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

Ryan, you know how hard you've worked for this. Hold your head up and march into that new opportunity with the enthusiasm that you play the game of golf with. Never be afraid to seek additional knowledge just as you also do in the game of golf. It is your work ethic and fire that will make you the best at whatever you decide to do.

Congrats. One of my uncles also left the Canadian Forces after a number of years to join a Police Service. He did not regret it.
