  • THE GOLF GODS GIVETH....

...But have mostly 'taketh-ed' from me over the last 3 Tuesdays at a local Kitchener 9 hole course called River's Edge.

I'm a 14 handicap, and my first 3 rounds I've played closer to almost a 30 handicap on this very tough and tight 9...

I typically don't play 'just 9', but a neighbor asked me to join the league this year of about 30 guys, and I agreed as another excuse to contribute to what I hope to be my most prolific year on the links, it gets me out of the office by 4PM, and it's a short drive to the course.

It's a special league, where it's played with a very stringent adherence to rules and scoring, this coupled with the pressure to perform has had me with let's say, a horrific first 3 rounds...

It was starting to get into my head, and I was regretting my decision to play the league, just after work, the stress of the day, excuse after excuse, etc. - One of the guys reminded me of my performance on the Par 5 7th hole last week that "Wasn't even close to the record of 24 shots" (I shot 13, YES, a 13 on that hole alone for Christ sake)...

Well tonight, I wasn't going to be intimidated and I was bound and determined to play well - Sure enough, I shot a 40 on this Par 35 terror, with 5 pars out of 9 holes played.

I can't stress the amount of relief and satisfaction I have after 'proving' my handicap wasn't a 'mistake', and finally playing a decent round at 'The Edge'...

By the way, I bogeyed the Par 5 7th - 7 shots better than last week!! God I love this game!!! (For now).

Yep playing first Men's league tonight and have to remember it's just a game...... Just noted playing with two players with HC's 6-7 shots better then me..... Better bring some type of game so I'm not making excuses....

I've thought I was on the cusp of a break through this year and regressed badly for a few games too last week, and just not able to put all together. But that is golf, expect more downs then ups, but the ups are just so satisfying....

The mental aspect of this game is so prevalent when you start to play for 'something'...

Trying to get the headspace clear that it's just a game, etc. can be easier said than done, but it's true at our level at least - Never really felt 'first tee jitters' or anything like that until this league, but this week's round will help for sure...

I'm actually going to read a few books on the mental aspect of the game this summer to hopefully toughen up in this area.

Dr. Gio Valiante has a few books that look interesting - Only hope I can get over the fact he sounds like a muppet when he's on GC's 'Morning Drive'

              Cheers,

                Re: THE GOLF GODS GIVETH....

My head is in too many places that are not golf and I am making a ton of errors. Playing much worse than I have previously and worse than I am capable of. I hope I can get through this.

Unfortunately a meh game with not the most approachable members (polite, but were not friendly). Add to that a 2:30+ front nine I just headed back to the clubhouse after posting my score (already was 7:30pm).....

I've been there, and can relate. It's easy to say, and harder to do, but remembering that we PLAY golf (not work golf) and to relax and enjoy the whole aspect of playing the game has helped me play better.
