      Re: Need a Ruling

I am assuming there is some obscure rule about the ball coming to rest near an animal, but from the pic I don't see any stakes, so said play it as it lies.

              Exactly.

We encounter that rule down here from time to time with snakes.

I was playing Disney Osprey and one of my playing partners pointed out the ball hit by a previous golfer. It was pretty funny.

So feeling safe is a very subjective determinant. Must a rules official be consulted to see if your safe is reasonable?

If taking relief from a hazard you must drop in a hazard.(as indicated in the video)
If taking relief from rough do I need to drop it in rough?
If taking relief from fairway do I need to drop it in fairway?

Does this not conflict with the play it as it lies rule? Surely if your ball comes to rest 40 feet up in a tree. Playing it from there would be dangerous, wouldn't it? Why not apply the rule?

                    It's your decision

If taking relief from rough do I need to drop it in rough?
If taking relief from fairway do I need to drop it in fairway?
No. As the ball is through the green drop it through the green.
Putting isn't golf, greens should be treated almost the same as water hazards: you land on them, then add two strokes to your score.

Let's not get carried away here. True, climbing a tree to play a shot MAY be dangerous, but it's stupid, as well. Likewise, playing a bunker shot INTO the wind, is dangerous, or hitting a ball where your club or ball may strike a tree and rebound at you. While these lies are "unpleasant," there are common and part of the game.

However, life threatening lies, like the alligator pic above, wasps nests and so on, are deemed not to be a part of the game.

I don't see how fairness has much to do with it. Had the gator not been there, it looks as though the ball would have gone into the WH. Not only did the gator save the player a stroke, but he allowed the player to pick a spot potentially with a much better approach angle and perhaps avoiding something like a bunker to play over. It is not and never has been the objective of the ruling bodies to make the game of golf "fair", only consistent.
