  • Ping G LS Tec Shaft Options

    Hi TGNers,

Last season i bought the Ping G LS Tec 9* Driver with a Tour 80 X shaft from Ping. After playing throughout the year and being in the simulator so far this winter, I have noticed my spin rates getting a little out of control and losing a lot of distance. My recent numbers are as follows:

    Club Head Speed: 115 mph
    Ball Speed: 160 mph
    Carry Distance: 265 - 275 yds
    Total Distance: 285 - 290 yds
    Back Spin: 3000 - 3800 rpm
    Smash Factor: 1.45

I know setting up a proper fitting is the best option to solve the issue but some insight as to what i may be able to do to make an adjustment without a fitting is greatly appreciated. Tipping the shaft? Changing the weight? Anything.

    Thanks in advance.

First things first. Goto Walmart and buy yourself powdered foot spray. Spray face and find impact location.

    This will tell anlot

Re: Ping G LS Tec Shaft Options

The lower on the face you hit it the higher the spin.

The higher on the face you hit it the lower the spin.

That shaft is a relatively low launch low spin shaft. (so changing the shaft won't do all that much)

The simple fix would be to simply tee the ball up higher.

And if you can, tee the ball more forward in your stance.

I will try those options next time I get to swing.

Will doing that bring the spin rate down 1800rpm though?

It might. But who said 2000 RPMs spin was ideal for you? What's your launch angle?

Re: Ping G LS Tec Shaft Options

What is your angle of attack?

Swing speed is high enough to compromise hitting down 1 or 1.5* but if your hitting down on it more than that you will see you spin rates go up.

yes strike location on the clubface can have a very large impact on spin

Also is it dead centre? Toe side? Heel side?

But below centre will be high spin. Below centre and heel will be even kore

Nothing. Shafts will at most influence about 500 RPMs. Heads and loft are the only things that can have a drastic reduction in spin characteristics. I mean you already have a reasonably low spin head, coupled with a low spin, very heavy shaft. My thinking is that you are hitting down to much on the driver, which is causing too much spin.

Have you thought about getting a quick look over from a teacher before you jump in with both feet about a new shaft/head that might not change anything?

Simulator? That might be your first problem as these things tend to be WAY off when spitting out numbers.

Plenty of information missing in this post to begin with, would be nice to see your numbers on Trackman or Foresight to get a real understanding of what's causing your sudden loss in distance.

Shafts have the least amount of affect on spin rate compared to head design, loft, and your swing. Look to technique first, i.e. a excessively negative angle of attack, then to loft. the G LS TEC is a fine low spin design.

This. The accuracy is only so good on camera based simulators. And sometimes they can display some ridiculous results.

Not sure where you are getting your data.....We have a Trackman and HD Sim that run simultaneously.....Numbers are basically identical. I would argue that indoors, a camera based system has more measurements and less calculations than a radar based system.
Let's qualify this by....there are many levels of simulators and many suck!!

I get my data from the simulators (High Definition Golf) I play on every week. I also hit balls on Flightscope indoors every week. I know my ball striking capability and Flightscope accurately reflects it, High Definition Golf does not. Last week High Definition Golf reported I flew a 5 iron 261 yards. I know my yardages well, it was actually about 210. I've played over 100 rounds on a simulator and there has yet to be a single round where I would say the distances are correct on more than 80% of the shots.
