  • How important is it which pros play a brand

Interesting item about a survey on the influence the pros choice of clubs has on an amateurs club purchase

The mind of America is seized by a fatal dry rot - and it's only a question of time before all that the mind controls will run amuck in a frenzy of stupid impotent fear. (In a letter dated 9-26-58)”
Golf Channel Equipment Insider Matt Adams asked his followers on Twitter if tour pro endorsements influence purchasing, and also set up the question with this Morning Drive segment on TaylorMade's recent Rory McIlroy signing. Granted, his followers are likely core golfers who are prone to

    Utterly unimportant*.

I'm not a pro. I don't have a pro's swing or game or time for practice.

I don't need their equipment. I can't play their equipment.

*Except for sunglasses. At least I can look like a pro in that way...

It's not important at all to me, as the assortment of odds and ends in my golf bag attests.
This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

In 15 years at Golf Town, not one person has asked me for the club that player X uses on Tour.

          I voted no.

It doesn't matter to me which pro plays my brand of clubs but it is somewhat comforting to know that at least some pros play the same brand I do.

I think the only one time a pro influenced my decision to buy golf-related gear is when I saw Shingo Katayama wearing a pair of Asics golf shoes at the Masters.

What really influences me in buying a certain club is what players are using years after its discontinuation (Ping Eye 2s, Lehman and his Superquad (not anymore) and VSteels) One tour player is still using a custom set of Ping i5s with conforming grooves and reduced offset which tells me that those older models can still hold their own against the latest and greatest. If those pros are playing those same clubs without an equipment contract that's even a bigger plus.

I probably tried the Nike one platinum because Tiger played it. The only time I consciously made a purchase based on pro usage.

Most amateurs would not be able to play the clubs touring pros use. The driver, for example may say TaylorMade M1 but, it is not something you could buy at Golf Town.

I am more concerned about what a pro may wear, and whether i like their overall style (see mcilroy v spieth) than who swings what club. my swing is my own.

I would bet the farm that if the big names started using Wilson or Topflight clubs more (like Rory/Tiger/DJ) sales would dramatically increase.

I do contend we subconsciously are influenced by what the pro's are using.

it's ridiculous to deny the impact that pro's have on what we use because
the majority of us play name brands and wear name brands.
A name brand buys us immunity within the herd, so when you fluff a shot someone is apt to complement your hat.

Seeing the brand pros play and wear does have influence - manufacturers wouldn't be paying big dollars to players if it didn't.

I started playing when Vijay was on his tear in 2004, I've been a fan of Cleveland clubs ever since - I'll always keep my full bag of Cleveland-Srixon gear, wether it be back-up or main bag.

The big brands sure spend a lot of money to have Pros game their products, so they certainly believe what they play influences our decision-making.

I'll admit I've tested an M2 driver more than once over the past 2 years after seeing how widely adopted it's been on tour. I haven't bought one, though I got seduced by watching Sunday afternoon golf!
