They pick the winner of the Lou Marsh Trophy today. She is definitely a contender but there is some tough competition, this being an Olympic year....

The main competition seems like Sidney Crosby, Penny Oleksiak and Andre DeGrasse.

If it wasn't an Olympic year I think she would have a good chance of winning the Lou Marsh. However I think one of the Olympians will win it.

Lots of worthy candidates. I'd probably lean towards an Olympian.

Of the contenders, a few stand out as also-rans:

Milos Raonic - world #3 is really something, but it's not #1.
DeGrasse - "poised to take over from Usain Bolt"? Maybe, but not #1 yet.
Tristan Thompson - love the guy, but LeBron is why he's got a ring.

Sid - did a lot, won a lot, and he's the reason his teams won.
Penny - hard to see how she can even stand straight with all those medals around her neck. She's gotta be a shoe-in.

Brooke - a good season, but ended in 3rd in the CME standings. A great year for her especially with a major win, but.... 3rd ain't first.

re: Milos and Brooke, #3 isn't number 1 but it isn't an award for best in the world, it is for best in Canada and #3 in tennis or golf is pretty darn good as Canadians go. Has any Canadian ever done better in either sport? (admittedly, Mike Weir did pretty well in 2003)

Unfortunately, it is hard to compare sports that play a heavy schedule all year round vs ones that have a few big events each year.

Gotta agree on Penny though. 4 Olympic medals is a lot for a Canadian, especially summer ones. Her gold is one of only 63 that Canada was won since 1900 and 10 of those came in Los Angeles 84 when there was limited participation.

Love Brooke but cannot see her winning the award.

It will be between Penny and Sid.

I fear Sid will win ( I'm a huge Sid fan) , but IMHO Penny is and should be the clear winner.

Brooke and Andre likely round out the top 4.

My voting would go Penny, Sid, Brooke ,Andre

I see voting going Sid, Penny, Andre, Brooke

At least next year is not an Olympic year, so she should have a good shot at it then if she keeps up her good play.

                  Lou Marsh went to Penny.

Apparently the last time a teenager won was another swimmer, Elaine Tanner, 50 years ago.

The number of viable choices indicate that it was a good year for Canadian sport.

It's a really nice video. thanks for posting it. I see that picture with the young girls with her and Britt and she seems just like a person that would ask them if she could have her picture taken with them.

I would think that this time next year, they will be again noting the 2017 season for Brooke. She has shown her abilities. Now with experience, she can concentrate on reducing those errors that will result in more victories. Yes, I think she is that good. And there is almost no one that has more drive and will power.
