Default Maintenance of Volkey Oil Can Wedges

any comments on how to clean up an oil can wedge?

great wedges... awesome feel, after a year in the bag in different weather conditions, the finish is long gone (which is fine), while it doesn't effect play, it doesnt look great.

does Titleist even recommend you do anything with them?

Most people just let them rust. All you can really do to clean them up is hit them with some steel wool to remove the surface rust and spray them with some silicone spray. That will keep them rust free for a little while.

On the other hand, rust reduces glare and creates more friction thus giving you more spin. So really, it's all up to you.......

The Oil Cans are intended to rust after the finish has gone... You can remove some of the surface rust as luv2golow says but I just give them a solid wipe after a round and brush out any of the remaining dirt in the grooves.

the other thing I forgot to mention is that they're also the Spin Mill wedges - so I'd like to clean the grooves clean without wearing the finish.

They are totally meant to rust. I clean mine with a brush with stiff bristles, soap + water. I pat them down with a towel afterwards because I find if I wipe too hard, the rust comes off.

First thing I did with my new Oil Can wedges last year was to "coke" them and and strip the oil can finish to raw.

Well I was going to start this in a new thread but it might actually apply here...

Check out this ebay auction for an absolutely SICK set of Titleist 690.CB Forged Irons with a Black Oxide finish... DROOOOOLLLLLL......

http://cgi.ebay.ca/Titleist-690-CB-3...QQcmdZViewItem

I say this fits because there is a good write-up in the item description that talks about Proper Care for the Black Ox finish...I figure it would be pretty much the same as it would be for a Vokey Oil Can.

Man...beautiful irons.

You may want to try to use CLR (removes, Calcium, Lime, and Rust) Im not sure what it will do to the surface, ie; painted logos etc...or your original oil can finnish. Another option is to search for a light surface sealant...such as...TopCote® Table & Tool Surface Sealant

TopCote is both a sealant and a lubricant.
Formulated for use on the metal table tops of jointers, planers, table saws, etc., it can also be used on hand tools. It adheres well to metal, protecting against moisture and corrosion, and providing for much smoother feeding of material.
It is easy to apply, lasts longer than paste wax, and will not stain wood. The 10.75 oz aerosol can will cover about 135 sq.ft. of surface.

Most people buy them cause they like the rusty look. I clean them only with plastic bristle brush, light soap and water and towel dry. Don't use steel wool or you'll lose the spin mill finish on the face real fast. It will wear off over time anyway though. I found after the first half season, the spin was noticably reduced on these (or probably any other) wedges. Time for some new wedges!
