  • Matching gap wedge shaft to irons?

I'm somewhat torn on a decision regarding my current club build. The shafts I purchased came with 4-gap wedge. Is it wise to maintain consistency up to my gap wedge or leave the wedge shaft that is already in it ? What are the advantages/disadvantages of either option ? I run 3 wedges (52,56,60) in addition to my pitching wedge. The 52 is a cleveland 588 cb that I use for full shots, shots around the green, lower pitch shots. Looking forward to hearing your guys take on it or similar experiences you may have had.

    Cheers, Brandon

It also depends on your wedge composition and usage.

    1) are you a 2/3/4 wedge player (including PW)
    2) how do you use your wedges and specifically the GW in this case?

If you're a 3or 4 wedge player I'm guessing for some your GW is just an 11 iron for many specially if your PW is a 44/45* Loft and your GW is a 50 or less. If that's the case I'd say be more inclined to match your irons.

    I'm a 3 wedge guy so I have a PW a GW/SW(52) and a SW/LW(58)

My 52 is for some full shots chip and runs and long bunkers or pitches from long grass. I match my iron shafts

My 58 is pure specialty so I use a wedge specific shaft.

IMO,make all the wedge shafts the same. These are your feel irons.

Generally if the gap wedge head style matches the rest of the irons then I usually recommend that the shaft match the rest of the irons. If playing traditional style wedges then I suggest the wedge Shafts are matched to what ever wedge shaft you prefer.

My irons are Cleveland 588 cb forged and my 52 is a Cleveland 588 cb rtx. Not exactly the same but pretty darn close... 56 and 60 are bladed 588's

If you take full shots then matching your irons should be fine. Also depends on what type of feel you like in your wedges - would you like it to play softer or stiffer than you irons? That would be the personal preference.

never put much thought into it. My set came with a GW that matches my irons but I love my wedges so I doubt I will game it. I've always used the stock wedge shafts and never felt the need to do anything different.

Depending on its use as posted above try it in your pitching wedge first and see what gives. If you like it go for it. If not just go back to the old shaft. Chances are it will be 1/2 longer than its steel counterpart unless it was butt trimmed to a specific length already

Re: your other thread: Shafting beads.

You could use a bit of sand or a bit of granulated sugar.

And just in case you have not checked this out already:

The Recoil™ Prototype shafts are constant weight designs, with balance points adjusted so there will be no drop off in swing weight when re-shafting your steel shafted irons.Better players looking for great feel and the ability to work the ball
                    Lower balance, higher flex point
Heavier weights with firmer tip for lower flight

Re: Matching gap wedge shaft to irons?

I just had the same dilemma and since I play X100's in my irons, I felt that a slightly softer flex might play better with my wedges so I left the stock shafts in my vokeys.

I would be interested in getting a fitter's opinion though.

9/P/G/S/L all have same shaft flex and length. Only thing different is loft. Takes about 3 weeks in the summer to zone in and figure out the different distances based solely on loft. Each is about 10-12 yards different
