I have a pretty loose setup as far as alignment goes- a little open, left foot goes wherever is comfortable for the shot, but when I played a lot, generally played my irons further back in my stance the shorter they are. This was part dogma that says to do this and part no doubt misunderstood/misinformed advice about "compressing the ball" to increase spin.
In the last few years of relative inactivity, I've been experimenting with playing the ball further forward in my stance and like it better. I hit it a little higher, the big draw is less pronounced but still comes out sometimes, and maybe am spinning it a little more.
My default shot before was dependably (except when it wasn't) a medium-low 20 yard raking draw. I could rip huge steak sized divots in wet conditions. Now that I'm starting to understand Trackman numbers a little and also have a baseline for how I'm hitting it now, I'm guessing I would have had a lower dynamic loft at impact and steeper angle of attack, but still a lower spin loft than now. This probably worked counter to what I was looking for.
The ultimate goal then, I guess, was to be able to rip a 9 iron back 20 feet; now I'm thinking a little more practically and want to be able to control whether it hops and stops, runs out a little, or zips back maybe 5-10 feet.
