Re: Modern Golf vs Golf Town fitting - my thoughts

Skytrack gets some great reviews for indoor use but seems garbage outside. This flightscope mevo looks like it's gonna be a game changer

If it provides spin angle/orientation (ie: backspin AND left/right). So far I haven't been able to see any indication that it will. If someone has other information I would be very excited.

For practice indoors in the winter I would love to have ball speed, launch angle, spin rate and orientation, and start direction. Looking at the random images they have on the website it seems it will only have part of these (ball speed, launch angle, backspin rate). In other words, it is mostly useless for golfers IMO

For club fitting indoors I would expect a GC2 with HMT. I wouldn't even bother with an indoor fitting otherwise. Way too much calculated stuff.

For an outside fitting I would expect a Trackman / Flightscope and a bucket of the balls I play.

If I was able to get both fittings (inside and outside) I would expect I would end up with two different clubs. One would be the optimal given perfect conditions. The other would be the optimal given the conditions of the day I got fit. This would require me to increase my equipment budget twofold

yah the mevo isnt clear...one would assume it MEASURES spin hence why it requires the reflective dot...if not you'd assume it would just calculate it based on a set of parameters such as club selection and whatever algorithm they use

I do believe in proper fitting, but at an appropriate level. GT or one of the sponsors here would work.

As an analogy, I could spend another $5000 on a suit and frankly, I'd still mostly look too old and fat.
Not if you went to the right tailor. Bad analogy.

Joe was a successful lawyer, but as he got older he was increasingly hampered by incredible headaches. When his career and love life started to suffer, he sought medical help. After being referred from one specialist to another, he finally came across an old country doctor who solved the problem. "The good news is I can cure your headaches... the bad news is that it will require castration." You have a very rare condition which causes your testicles to press up against the base of your spine and the pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles." Joe was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He couldn't concentrate long enough to answer, but decided he had no choice but to go under the knife. When he left the hospital he was without a headache for the first time in 20 years, but he felt like he was missing an important part of himself. As he walked down the street, he realized that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life. He saw a men's clothing store and thought, "that's what I need .. a new suit." He entered the shop and told the salesman, "I'd like a new suit." The elderly tailor eyed him briefly and said, "Let's see... size 42 long." Joe laughed, "That's right, how did you know?" "Been in business 60 years!" Joe tried on the suit. It fit perfectly. As Joe admired himself in the mirror, the salesman asked, "how about a new shirt?" Joe thought for a moment and then said "sure..." The salesman eyed Joe and said "let's see...34 sleeves and...16 and a half neck." Joe was surprised, "that's right, how did you know?" "Been in the business 60 years" Joe tried one the shirt, and it fit perfectly. As Joe adjusted the collar in the mirror, the salesman asked "how about some new shoes?" Joe was on a roll and said "sure!" The salesman eyed Joe's feet and said "Let's see... 10-1/2...E." Joe said astonished, "that's right, how did you know?" "Been in business 60 years!" Joe tried on the shoes and they fit perfectly. Joe walked comfortably around the shop and the salesman asked "how about some new underwear?" Joe thought for a second and said, "sure!" The salesman stepped back, eyed Joe's waist and said "Let's see... size 36." Joe laughed, "Ah ha! I got you I've worn a size 34 since I was 18 years old." "The salesman shook his head, " "you can't wear a size 34, it will press your testicles up against the base of your spine and give you one hell of a headache."

              Turns out you're right.

This guy must have upped his budget!

On Topic, I found the post by crazyballa on gap analysis interesting. Sounds very useful for those with enough game.

Trackman is a radar that tracks the ball, with GT's limited space, there is no chance Trackman can accurately give you proper ball flight. You are absolutely right when you saw 2 different ball flights. I've seen that myself with GC2 vs Trackman/Flightscope. There's no way any fitters/coaches should trust Trackman indoors, especially with limited space such as Golftown.

I could expand on this topic more if you guys would like. But I don't want to derail this thread.

                Hope this helps =)
Trackman has done a great job of becoming a household name but I'd prefer GC2 over Trackman as well, especially with HMT. Location of strike is crucial to properly tracking ball flight and launch characteristics. Unless you're monitoring it with impact tape, foot spray or something, it's just a guess. With GC2 that's taken care of.

                    Apparently it just got better:

                    Foresight QCQuad

Most would guess Trackman, but Foresight is actually the #1 Launch Monitor in the World - and with the introduction of the GCQuad, it just got better. Foresight had one of the most trafficked booths at the show. The buzz for the Quad is only building as rumors that notable Trackman Guys are poised to make the switch to Foresight. The launch monitor market is shifting rapidly. Look for Foresight to make a huge leap this year as word of the new and improved GCQuad gets out.

I believe that it's somewhere around 18K USD which is around 7K less than the Trackman indoor/outdoor unit.

Exactly! And even with impact tape and foot spray you're still somewhat guessing as every club will gear differently!

Yep 18K USD with software, 7K less than trackman indoor/outdoor and that's not even including the annual service fees that I hear range from 2500 - 3000 USD a year for Trackman =P

Do you know what the used GC2s that they are taking as trade ins will go for? Approximately?

We were talking about which could be the best place to get fitted for a driver. How about a Golftec location (Miss) or golflab? where do either of these fall into the lineup?

When you get a driver fitting at MG do you walk out with the identical club/shaft combo demo you hit the best,
or do they make it up later when you are gone (ie, you don't get the club you hit the best)?
