  • Devil's Pulpit Extra Hole?

I did some searching and although I found reference to it in a thread in 2005, I can't find more information.

Having followed a lot of the nice golf courses on this forum for years, I have a big interest in potentially joining the Pulpit/Paintbrush in the next 3-5 years when kids are a bit older to allow for regular 18 hole golf. Either that or play my years away at Osprey.

Being a dreamer, I had been researching courses in my area well ahead of any potential join date and took a peek at the the Pulpit on google satellite. Maybe a member/someone who knows a regular there can tell me why there appears to be 19 full holes on the course? From what I can tell from the routing, it looks like hole 11 could be played on 2 different holes?

This was posted on the Golf Club Atlas

    "Brad Klein:

Devil's Pulpit north of Toronto has three 11th holes, one of which plays as a Bye Hole to get to the 12th tee after you've played one of the 11ths. Don't ask. When you're that rich, you can do anything you want. Sounds like fun to me."

I have played the course once, and don't remember it, but we were so happy to be there we would have missed it easily.

That's correct - it is actually two separate holes - you can play either the longer par 4 or the shorter par 4. When I played there with Fairways, they had a sign indicating which was in play. I believe there's also a par 3 as well used to settle bets etc by the members.

        Re: Devil's Pulpit Extra Hole?

The course owners, Trivial Pursuit inventors Chris Haney and Scott Abbot were big gamblers and they needed extra holes to settle their bets when they were tied after 18, this was a good way to avoid going back out and disrupting the play on the course.
Eddie Shack who was also a regular at the Pulpit was a big golf gambler and reportedly lost his own golf course on Hwy27 back in late 70's.

          Thanks for the quick replies!

Sounds like I should use those years to either make my golf game or bank account much stronger if I want to consider a membership haha.

Where at WS? Been a while since I've been there, but I don't recall it.

                They added a 2nd par 3 , 11b

It's also a Troon inspired by hole.

Cool. Assume they used the area to the right that was a sod farm? I enjoy that course for all its haters.

Glen Abbey has one once you venture into the valley. Its a par 3 that was put into play when 12 was not in play...

After playing 11 you can hit back towards the 11 tee on an uphill par 3.

If I recall correctly, Sleepy Hollow also has an extra hole. Can any members confirm?

Glen Cedars #5 has two greens, as does #16. I always thought it was an interesting quirk.
