  • Callaway HX Tour and HX Tour56 Golf Ball Review

Here's a little review I received today. Please be aware that this is not my review, but having played both last year, I have to agree with the reviewer.

The Callaway HX Tour and Tour 56 Provides the Elusive Third Dimension

Both the Callaway HX Tour and the HX Tour 56 are great golf balls that provide a new dimension to improving your game. Not only does your game depend on your swing and your knowledge of club head control, but also on the ball you play with.

To many people this has never been a serious consideration. “I can play with any ball” they state. What they really mean is that their game is still dependent on their swing and that they are still trying to impart any controlled spin on the ball. Normally they have difficulty no matter what ball they play with. Hence their statement “I can play with any ball”, because they are unable to differentiate one ball from another.

The Differences between the HX Tour and the HX Tour 56

With Callaway HX Tour balls even they will find a difference, providing them with a dimension to their game that they never knew existed. The better players, however, can really tell the difference, not only between golf balls, but between Callaway HX Tour and Callaway HX Tour 56. So what are these differences?
Both balls have a thinner cover than the original, and the cores are as precisely centered as is currently technologically possible. The more centered the core to the cover, the truer the ball will travel, whether in the air or on the ground. The patented HEX aerodynamic hexagonal system is still there and still seems better than conventional round dimples, but has been improved to give even more distance through the air. The difference between them is the slightly softer cover of the 56 that provides it with a bit more spin control round the greens, but pays it for that in distance off the tee.
The HX Tour 56 could be Better for the Big Hitters

That’s not to say the Callaway HX Tour is poor around the greens. It is pretty good compared to the Titleist ProVi and Wilson Px3, but is a bit down on the sheer control of spin that you can have using the 56. It’s horses for courses really. If you can spin the ball well whatever you play with, then the HX Tour would probably be better, providing you with a few yards more distance than you can get from the Tour 56, but if you can whack the ball down 250 to 300 yards with a lake ball, then the Tour 56 will give that little bit of extra spin control you might need around the greens.
Anybody who can whack a lake ball 250 yards is probably too much of a Hulk to be able to control spin in any case, and will need the tour 56.
A Thin Cover is not for Rookies

Possibly one criticism of the Callaway HX Tour is its cover. It is thin, and for any but the best golfers can tend to peel quickly if the club does not hit it perfectly. Then again, players who miss the shot too often shouldn’t be playing with these balls. They are designed for better players who know exactly what they are looking for in a golf ball, and who understand this extra dimension to their game.
The cover, however, has one advantage over other golf balls. There is no visible seam. What this means to a pro golfer is that the performance of the ball will be same irrespective of how it is lying. Seamed covers are prone to ‘phantom flyers’ caused by the orientation of the seam at strike. The Callaway Pro Tour has no such problem and you can be sure that however your ball is lying you will get the same result.
So, what are the comparisons between the Callaway HX Tour and the Callaway HX Tour 56?

    HX Tour

    1. Farther distance than most other balls on the circuit.
    2. Supreme accuracy due the concentric nature of the three parts of the golf.
    3. Improved spin over the original HX: rather than run on, your ball can stop dead.
    4. A hard, durable thin cover.
    5. No apparent cover seam, providing the same performance from all lies.
    HX Tour 56

    1. All benefits of the Tour, apart from number 1!
    2. Marvelous spin control around the greens.
    3. A great ball for the big hitter who needs better spin control.
    And are there any negatives?

    Negatives:

None, apart from a tendency for the more average player to strip the thin cover with less than accurate iron shots! This may be a negative in that respect, but these balls are intended for the better players who know their balls, and can tell the difference, not only between makes of golf balls, but between the options provided by each maker.
