  • Grip Size for Different Clubs

Building on the idea of SuperStroke and other jumbo putter grips to help quiet the hands...
has anyone tried different grip sizes within their set of clubs?
A larger grip on a wedge/driver to take a little of your hands out of the equation
Or the opposite. Thinner grip on a wedge/driver to maybe get more hand/speed into the swing?

I've gone to mid plus two wraps for all clubs

My fingers are long and this helps enormously with control.

I was thinking more about just the a few clubs with different grip sizes.
i.e. irons and hybrids are mid size but adding a few wraps to your wedges

that all depends on your tendencies with varying clubs, the bigger the grip the more difficult it will be to release the club, if you slice the ball this will never work (bigger grips) if you hook the ball then there is potential for a successful experiment

          Not a bad idea actually.
I am surprised nobody mentioned this before.

My irons are all one grip type and size(1/64+)
          Wedges are(1/64-)
Driver,Woods and hybrid are standard size
          things change

You go from Mid size irons to slim grip on your wedges?!
And you don't find too big a change going from your PW to A or S?

First. Those are my personal preferences.

1/64+ (.015) does not make the grips on the irons midsize.
A 1/32+ would, and at 1/16+ they could be considered Oversize. but that is all relative to your standart handsize

A wedge is a precision club, and as such the feel in mine is enhanced through a slightly thinner grip. I seldom use my wedges with a full swing.

A slightly larger than standard on my irons gives me more face control with the full swing. The harder you swing the more purchase I get with the slightly larger grip.

I want to swing as free as I can with the driver woods and hybrid so I keep their grip size at my natural.

See I like my wedges to be a bit bigger in grip for less hand action

also note that when you go from standard to medium size grips you are also adding approximately 10-12 grams of weight, which can be a good thing.

I do not buy-in to the theory of adding different grip sizes amongst clubs as a source of variation.

Re: Grip Size for Different Clubs

Harry my grips are all Standart size. My choice of three different Grip allows me to take advantage of their taper without extra tape or deviating from the "standart" size. Some makers feature more taper under the lower hand, others less so.

all are .580 core size. the reason I mention core size is that a .580 core grip on a .600 shaft will make it 1/64+

Lamkin Crosslines -their lower hand section tapers more than most, ideal for my wedges
Golf Pride Softie- Standard size-Their lower hand section stays almost parallel- for my irons

Golfpride Tour Wraps(the tackier new style)- standart size minimal taper for the woods.

Re: Grip Size for Different Clubs

I put a few more wraps on my driver. I'm not so concerned about distance, just want to get a decent drive out there and on the short stuff.
I also put a standard grip on S wedge and a Mid size on another to see how if it make any difference.
