  • Scoring relative to par?

I don't play competitive and when I score my and my other non competing stroke play partners, I use a relative to par system. Really its just adding a dash if par, and -1,1,2,3 etc as you score relative to par. So a bogey is a 1. Much easier to add up a 5 or 14 vs a 41 or 50!

Wondering out of curiosity if anyone else did this?

    Re: Scoring relative to par?

I rarely use a scorecard and tend to keep my score vs. par. If I'm not playing well then it's in relation to bogey.
As you said it is a lot easier to track it that way.

If I'm carrying solo, I keep +/- in my head. If pushing/carting, I write my score on each hole normally.

I just use the number 5 for each hole. I then accumulate + or - relative to 5 and then add that cumulative number to 45 after 9 holes.

Never write down score and add it up after the round. And yes usually +1, +2, +2,+4,+4....... through 18 holes. Seldom are there too many birdies to reduce the score

That's exactly what I do. I started doing it a couple of years ago, and find it much easier to track than adding up the actual numbers. That, and I hate seeing an "8" on a scorecard...this way a triple on a par 5 is marked down as a "3." Suits the eye better for me

i write the score as that is what i have to enter in for my handicap. I also like to see what I actually scored per hole.

I've been marking my scorecard like that for years.

Cool. Glad to know I'm not alone ;-) Had never seen anyone else do it that way and was curious why as its seems so much simpler assuming you aren't submitting your card for formal processing.

I always just keep +/- in my head...relative to bogey.

I do the same and in the top right corner in small writing I record how many putts. I aim for 29 or less putts per round.

Game golf keeps track of it for me. As well as all other stats.

                          Re: Scoring relative to par?

I just write the scores that I made on each hole. As it is, if I'm focused during the round, I can recall every shot that I hit and most that the other golfers have hit. Also, I always track, I'm my head, where I stand in relation to par.
This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

I keep +/- to par in my head. If I'm playing a match or tourney I can usually walk an opponent/competitor through all of their shots. It's amazing how forgetful people are.
