+1, you really can't hit a driver on three of the par fives.

About Angus Glen, the South course. Many of you have mentioned it. Is it because of the price or the course itself? I rather like the course. #4, 9, 10 are very good holes and their are several other good ones. Just wondering.

I prefer #1 and #12. And have a love/hate relationship with #18.
#10 on Angus south reminds me of a a now lost hole on back 9 of the old Seaton course.

How many truly memorable holes are there at Angus? How many would you include on your 'dream' list of your favourite/best 18 holes?

Now factor in the price and the pace of play.

Angus was originally opened in the 90s to be a premium golf experience mainly catering to corporate events. It was the first such course opened in east Toronto and at the time it fulfilled a need. It had mainly private course conditions, first class customer service, a reasonably attractive/challenging golf course (south) and MOST IMPORTANLY had Kevin Thistle to promote/hype the experience. It succeeded exceptionally well and the Stollery family did very well indeed. In fact, the Cdn Open on the South was a great success even though John Rollins won it at about 16/17 under.

They "jumped the shark" when they built the North Course...a poor example of faux links that was too hard to maintain the way it was designed (sod wall bunkers, etc.) and they had to have it redone by Davis Love. That resulted in an even less attractive design that people didn't feel "special" on...and tournaments only wanted the North if the South wasn't available.

Fast forward a decade and the conditions are now spotty at best, the South is now a tricked up mess with the new ponds etc., the hype of Thistle et al is long gone, the prices are outrageous, and Gordon Stollery must be turning over in his grave.

Too bad...but they now deserve the most over-rated honour.

Don't want to thread jack but because of the Kevin Thistle lovers in this thread I thought I would mention this,
which BTW I did not notice anywhere else on here, but if it warrants a new thread maybe one of you would start one.

Kevin is now the VP of Business Development at Windmill Golf Group in Calgary.
If any are familiar with this you will know that this is Phil Mickelson's baby, a brand new Golf Course and Housing project out in Hampton Alta.
Seems like an excellent move for Kevin but means I guess we won't be seeing him anytime soon around these parts. Maybe though he could show up at the Toronto Golf Show at a Calgary Tourist booth.

Thanks for that reply. I understand the North course is not loved. To be fair I have not played Angus Glen lately. The recent ponds you refer to were likely mandated by new policies on water use at all courses but that doesn't excuse poor placement. I always felt these corporate golf havens would not appeal to most golfers based on price. Regardless of price I liked the South. To bad it's been changed.

Played on Wooden Sticks in their late fall special. It was a shot gun start as around 128 golfers showed up for that weekend deal. At the 9A par 3 hole they were selling $10 vouchers that could also be used in the Proshop. But as I managed to make the green from the teeoff I got a free round to be used by June 30th 2017. The catch is that it can only be used after 2.00 PM and as they registered my ID, unfortunately it cannot be transferred to any other golfer. So has anyone else won this free round and looking out for golf partners? Yes, this course is well overpriced, but I want to take advantage of this free round sometime in June.

Personally I believe the issue with some of the more expensive, or according to this thread, overrated golf courses is the terrible conditions we are paying a premium for!? I used to feel less guilty paying $150 to play Angus Glen or Eagles Nest or Wooden Sticks or any other $100+ course around the GTA. Now I see bunkers not groomed, divots not seeded, fairways uncut, greens bumpy and diseased and full of ball marks? I see less and less professional service and courtesy, beverage carts with nothing in them while only seeing them once or twice a round. I dont mind paying the money to play a nice golf course but if im going to spend $100-$200 on green fees somewhere, i want to see the value in the course not just the old reputation. The only public course (although expensive) in the gta i have played over and over again with pretty darn good conditions is Osprey Valley. And the play all day deal is the best darn deal anywhere i have seen.

...but that's still $180 out-of-pocket! I'd rather pay $100 and play Woodington's 2 courses!

Personally a magnificent layout, on a remarkable piece of land with good conditioning can be worth the high green fees charged.

Just do not see that many of these in area immediately adjacent to or in the GTA.

Perhaps some of the top end private 'players courses'.

But public courses? Some will argue Eagles Nest. Other than that?

Osprey Valley seems to have hit the sweet spot for many.

Yes financially Woodington Lake would make sense and they are decent courses. We may have played on different occasions, however in my opinion Osprey Valley (3 very decent layouts with a great practice facility) is a much superior place to spend money. Firstly, the pace of play is outstanding because they have 3 courses, secondly the fairways and greens are kept much more like a private course rolling fast and true, and lastly the courses at Osprey are much nicer visually with a variety of different holes and tees. The place is just pure golf with no hassles from anybody. Woodington Lake to me is no match as far as conditions and pace of play. For $180 you get to play 3 great and fun tracks (if you have the time..) I have yet to play any public course with better than average conditions and pace of play. Maybe Copper Creek, however you will spend $160+ for one round of golf. Have you found any other gems around the GTA?

I don't think that you need to apologize for that.

There are two requirements, two! A love of Osprey and a fanatical dedication to wandering off topic.

The lack of OT enforcement on this site is actually one of its charms, IMO. It allows threads to evolve, and who's against evolution?

Yes you are right shooter. While im here... Watsons Glen and Lakeridge Links are overpriced/overrated in the Durham Area. Pay the extra little bit to play Oakridge or Royal Ashburn I would say. Or there is a 9 hole course called Kings Bay in the little town of Seagrave across the lake from Casino, its a great track and well worth the money or drive. Best nine hole course i have ever played. Angus Glen North is by far the most overrated and boring course in Markham area.

Agreed that Watson's is over-rated & has become over-priced (with few "deals")---same can be said for Royal Ashburn, but I quite like the layout of Lakeridge (and even Whispering Ridge)
