  • Do I need longer clubs?

    Hi everyone,

So I have been going to the range quite a bit the last couple days to work on my irons and full shot wedges because I just have not been comfortable with them. I am an 8 handicap right now but my iron play has really been struggling lately, mainly to do with strike.

The problem I was having was that I would have trouble making a good strike on the ball and taking a proper divot, thinning a lot of shots and just generally picking at it without really making a "solid" strike (you know the feeling...). So today I started playing around with how much I was gripping down (choking up) on the club and decided to try out gripping up on it, sort of having the butt of the grip inside of my palm just barely, essentially playing the club about half and inch longer. I proceeded to just pure everything with a much more comfortable and effortless swing, tried it on the wedges too and boom perfect strike and so much more comfortable hitting them.

So my question is should I just keep doing this, I hit about 300 balls (2 large buckets) today with it and all felt really good, or should I look into maybe getting them lengthened or going for a fitting? I am 6'0 and wrist to floor is 35" fyi.

More knee bend or wider stance save your money .

Seems like this advice changes his entire swing and will probably lead to other problems. Too much knee bend can put you back on your heels and cause balance issues. A wide stance can restrict the backswing and forward swing.

Add an extension to one club and try it out. Should be about $20.
Aim at nothing and you will hit it every time.

wow 300 balls is a lot, here is an alternative approach

instead try 1 small bucket and hit every shot like you are playing a round of golf, go through your complete preshot routine on every shot. focus on target

practice with the same focus you would have on the course

        after every shot change clubs

        try that a couple days

then see how your next round of golf goes

(so no I wouldn't lengthen the clubs)

Sorry but I don't agree with this at all. Standing athletic is key to great ball striking. Please review my site to see what a great fitting will do for you.

Your thoughts on longer clubs makes sense but the math has to be right. A TLT fitting will do wonders for your game.

Probably the best tip ever, at least for this old golfer
But achieving +2" irons with a regular swing weight remains "mission impossible" so far for me.
            Much obliged and thanked !

You could with very light graphite shafts and KE4 hollow irons( no weights)

              • Four gram factory installed heel and toe weights-( removed= 4 sw points)

There are ways to make a set that will fit and meet your needs. I have many golfers with greater than 2" longer clubs (especially the wedges) all fit to the TLT math model.

I am not convinced that you need +2" - and the only way to tell is to go through a TLT fitting. I have read many of your posts and unfortunately I see a great randomness and costly attempts at trying to find a solution. Not trying to be anything but helpful here and I do wish you luck, but there is a solution that is attainable that would hep you get your game on track.
                Regards

Thanks Dan, much appreciated. The thing with this stubborn old goat is that i want to do it "my way", and the discovery and finding a solution by myself is fun for me. But i am convinced that you would fit me into a perfect set of clubs in no time

Glad to help (if I did) and I do understand your wants. It is exciting to see an attempt come full circle and work the way you expected. Continued good luck with your project.

Everytime I shorten my driver my swing becomes steep and I slice. Therefore I just added the half inch I took off my driver and then some with an extension. Last round back to hitting fairways and none of the issues I experienced with shorter driver. Also lengthened my lob wedge some time back and hit it great. As much as no one will tell you to lengthen your clubs. For some people it is worth a try. Won't play less than 46" driver moving forward.
