  • Putter or Irons?

    Hey. Newbie here.

I went and had my swing analyzed. Had joined a golf league last year and was unhappy with my inconsistent play.

Turns out, my shafts are too stiff and i dont load correctly on the back swing, and that results in poor unloading at impact. That and my hands were a tad out of alignment.

So, while there i fell in love with a putter. Traded in some clubs and bought it.

But now im having 2nd thoughts. Should i have bought irons instead?
Or since, 45% of the game is spent on the green (and scoring) should i stay with the putter?

    Cheers,
    Chet

stick with the putter. it can turn a mediocre iron game into a decent round. I can be all over the place from time to time off the tee and fairway. but inside 150yd i rarely take more than 3 to get it in the hole.

chipping and putting is where you save strokes. imo of course

First thing is to remember we 'play' golf... it is not our job and we shouldn't connect our ego to how we "play" (mea culpa). Grip it and rip really works. thinking too hard causes stress and makes you tense.

Your misses off the tee is interesting because you have by far the greatest margin of error. Aim toward safety and you should have a whole bunch of 150 yard shots.

Keep the putter, you will use it around 30 to 36 times around.

Screw the putter. You should buy irons that are the right flex. If you're playing irons that are too stiff, not only will your game be bad, but you're going to develop a bad swing that tries to compensate for the stiff shafts, and you're going to ingrain habits that will plague you for years even when you have proper shafts.

You can get the great putter later and there will be no lasting impact due to the delay. At this point it would only provide a marginal improvement anyway. By opting for the putter over proper shaft flex, you're sacrificing the long-term health of your game for the sake of negligible gains.

Tough call... was your short game as inconsistent as your full swing?

Based on your post I would have gone with the irons. By your own admission you were frustrated with inconsistent play with your clubs already, so why not target and try to fix that first. Sure you might sink a few more putts, but wont you still be frustrated with your irons at the end of the day??

                  Re: Putter or Irons?

Hitting nice iron shots is more fun and more difficult than decent putting. So the obvious answer is both. But if I had to choose I'd likely go for the irons.
If you're really just beginning don't get too fussed about your scores, just learn to hit the ball better.

Welcome aboard Chet. Lots of good people and great advice to be found here.

Assuming you were looking at new irons, why not keep the putter and buy used irons? You could save quite a bit over brand new and really not give up much of anything in the way of performance.

Decided to keep the putter and get some gently ?loved irons.

                            Now the big question. Which?

Yes it ends up personal preference of looks and feel.

But, 2-3 yr old technology like speed blades or xr or rsi or g25/30.
Or newer tech g30/g or m2 or ????

I'd get the irons. Too stiff may cause you to pull your shots and you are loosing distance. The putter you can get next year.
