The good thing about putting is that you can practice it anywhere. If you have a private office, you can get a putting system at golf town and practice there. It's good to get up and stretch anyway. Of course, you can also practice at home.
I've been working on keeping my body very still and only using my shoulders to putt. I watch the smoothness of the pros and try to learn from them. Watch David Toms...so smooth. I'm also really trying to swing through the ball and trust that when I take it back and it goes off line, when I swing it forward it will be back on line when it makes contact with the ball. So I'm really trying to avoid re-aiming during my swing. As far as speed and reading the contours of greens - I think this comes from a lot of practice. Get to the course a bit early and practice putting to get an idea of the speed of the greens. Although I decide how hard I'm going to hit the ball by "feel" it's important to understand the connection between speed and break that I think only comes from practice. But maybe somebody else has a tip on reading speed and break... Good luck

The Best instructional videos I've seen on the net is from Shawn Clement. He keeps it simple.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=s5TockpcqG8 I heard somewhere (I could have this quote wrong) that about 50% of 6 foot putts are missed. |

There's no sub for practice. Go to 'end of the roll' and pick up a cheap piece of carpet. They will be able to guide you to the right type-- I got one about 7'x14' for $50. Throw it down in the basement, or wherever, and go at it. My putting improved tremendously by doing this. I think the faster the carpet the better.
Also, a wider stance helps to keep the lower body still while putting.

I would super recommend the boomerang golf assistant. Every time I use it, I see a drastic improvement in my putting. It's a very simple concept, and won't cost you an arm and a leg.
Check it out BOOMGOLF

IMO -Start by balancing your putter. 'Balance Certified' balancing can be done by any club fitter.
At set up, are your eyes over the ball and slightly behind the ball? A test would be to drop a ball from the eye away from the hole. If it drops behind the ball you are putting - in line with your intended site line - you are in the correct position. Let me know if it works for you |

I have good days and bad days putting, I have to say that my good days are when I dont over anylize a putt. I read it from well behind the ball, while I'm doing that I'm practicing my stroke for how hard I think I should hit the ball. I walk up, align my putter to my target, align my feet and body to my putter, take one last look, and go. The point is, that when I stick to my pre-putt routine, and just think about what I have to do, rather than thoughts like "I need this to save bogey, or par" I have better success.
When it comes to the mechanics, and your stroke, that takes practice, and patience.... try a belly putter if all else fails.
