I am assuming there is some obscure rule about the ball coming to rest near an animal, but from the pic I don't see any stakes, so said play it as it lies.

I was playing Disney Osprey and one of my playing partners pointed out the ball hit by a previous golfer. It was pretty funny.
So feeling safe is a very subjective determinant. Must a rules official be consulted to see if your safe is reasonable? If taking relief from a hazard you must drop in a hazard.(as indicated in the video) If taking relief from rough do I need to drop it in rough? If taking relief from fairway do I need to drop it in fairway? Does this not conflict with the play it as it lies rule? Surely if your ball comes to rest 40 feet up in a tree. Playing it from there would be dangerous, wouldn't it? Why not apply the rule?

Can anyone site the rule or decision? I tried to find a reference to it and couldn't.

I don't see how fairness has much to do with it. Had the gator not been there, it looks as though the ball would have gone into the WH. Not only did the gator save the player a stroke, but he allowed the player to pick a spot potentially with a much better approach angle and perhaps avoiding something like a bunker to play over. It is not and never has been the objective of the ruling bodies to make the game of golf "fair", only consistent.

In fact it is virtually the same as taking relief from an immovable obstruction.
That is where equity comes in. NB Not fairness.

I laughed/ grimaced when I wrote the word "fair" as an off the cuff comment. It is one of the most common words bandied about when someone receives a less than favorable ruling at junior events or ballbusting matches with close friends. If anything I should have more likely written to reflect the all encompassingness of the decisions as it more common than you would think in some areas.
I have seen gimme questions concerning this on a few rules quizzes and it always brought a smirk in a test situation.

That thing is just a baby... cook it up for some alligator stew.
Play the ball down.

Because they can't turn quickly, smack him on the tail, and when he jumps in the water, hit the ball as it lies!!!

Sadly, hitting your ball near certain gassy TGN members is not considered a dangerous situation.
Should be but....
