  • Stripping Chrome and Leaving Irons in their Raw/Rusting condition - Doable ???

    Hey all
Just a quick question as per title. Starting with an old set of chrome plated blades in "rough" shape (chrome peeling) and having them stripped of chrome BUT then leaving and playing them in their "naked" LOL, Raw/Rusting condition.
Is this doable and will it affect the playability of the irons ?
    All best and cheers !

Yes, it can be done, though it's not really a DIY project. There are some pretty harsh chemicals involved in stripping plating (Hydrochloric acid, etc.).

Your best bet would be to find a local plating shop that could do it for you. They could also rechrome them while they're at it, but they could leave them in the raw state, as well.

I think playability would depend on the base metal. If it's stainless, then they shouldn't play much different. If they're an older set of blades, then they're likely carbon steel and would feel softer and wear a bit faster without the chrome plating.

Hey, thanks so much for this detailed reply - much appreciated
      1) re. stripping: not doing it myself, for sure.
      2) re. wearing them down: got only few years left on the green side of the grass and combined with my slow swing speed, i'm pretty sure they will oulast me
      Again THANKS and cheers !!!

Looks like this company (very well known refinishers), The Iron Factory, will strip the heads for you for $35/USD per club + shipping + taxes. Seems like a good deal as the process is extremely labour intensive and uses a lot of dangerous materials.

The Iron Factory repairs, rebuilds, and refinishes golf clubs.

          @VO.
I wouldn't spend the money on chrome stripping a set of old blades.
For the same dollars you could replace them with same in better condition.

BTW what irons are you talking about?

Get them stripped and get an oilcan finish put on them. Maybe give Golfworks Canada a call in Ottawa, they could likely help.

Nothing in particular ATM. Just wanted to know if I stumble on an old "gem" of a blade in a local garage sale, maybe grab them and see what happens. But my Wify will definitely NOT be happy me dragging another set of irons into our small 2 bdrm apartment, LOL.
                Cheers !

Here is a thread at GolfWRX for raw irons

I love the look of raw irons and looking to get a set done. If your irons are raw Post some pics of your set. If you can include where you got the work done or if you did it yourself and how its done. Thanks guys.

                    So much appreciated, Andy, THANKS
Boy, some really nice looking "raw" irons there.

...do you have any raw irons in your collection ?

...Oh, from the thread you posted above, found this bit, on the weight loss after de-chroming interesting - is this of concern from the playability point of view ?

Here you go...full before and after on a set of Honma Rose Proto 4 - 10.

No raw irons for me. As I do my much shorter length builds, losing that much head weight is a deal breaker.

But they do look really cool !

But just thinking about what u just said, maybe with some "weight loss" raw irons might be good for extended shafts ???
