Have also experienced this at DF multiple times. It's usually pretty good once you get past that but I feel like every time I play I roll up to the second and mentally come to terms that it will be a 5 hour round
As I also pointed out, it was a Friday afternoon and there was a special for like $50 with a cart. But the course packed the hell out of the tee sheet and the pace reflected that.

To me the numbers simply don't add up, i wont bore you with the math....it's simple enough though
but if a group is 20+ minutes behind pace after not even completing two holes , one of them a par 3, your recommendation to avoid the place should be heeded by the op

In addition to already disliking the layout, they tend to jam the tee sheets as well.
I think the day I went was a Friday and they had a special, like 2 for $100 with cart. I should have known it to be a red flag.
I'll take your word for it and certainly the wrong day with the deal etc. I had a similar deal at Royal Ontario years ago, Friday afternoon in the summer, drinks flowing etc. Four groups stacked the same on a par three but they were doing some sort of hit the green contest with young ladies collecting the money so that slowed things down, plus it was mid round so groups had time time pile up.
The second hole is insane to be stacked that deep but I guess sh.. happens.

I think someone had already mentioned it briefly a few posts back, but if Crosswinds is not too much of an inconvenience, I would add that to the top of your list. Not sure why so many people don't play here more often or have even heard about it. Super easy walkable course, a few challenging holes but pretty flat for the most part with only a few water hazards and primarily tree lines as the main barriers between holes. The course itself is always in great condition and the clubhouse can almost be considered one for a private course.
Would definitely stay away from Tyandaga unless you plan on being one of the very first people out each day. Most rounds will be extremely slow if you tee off any time after 8am. The layout of some of the holes is the biggest problem, especially the starting 3 which causes things to be backed up.

Have certainly noticed that the second at DF can be a bottleneck. If anyone is an architecture aficionado, is that considered a bad way to start a course, from a pace of play POV? Short par-4 that doesn't take long to play followed by a mid-length par-3 with ball swallowing trouble down the right. Seems like it might be less than optimal. Also, there are no par-5s until the 7th. Assume par-5s are generally best for spreading groups out?

I’ll throw it out there that Carlisle isn’t far from DF, offer very reasonable membership rates, have 3 nines and a range, is very walkable (aside from a decent walk between two holes on the north course). From what I was told that because it’s Kaneff, if there is a tournament booked you can play other kaneff courses at the same level with your membership or play a small fee and play Royal Ontario.
I played about 10 early morning weekend rounds there last season and walked the course (usually with members) in about 3.5 hours. From what I experienced the membership is an older and very welcoming crowd.

I like the layout at Dragon's fire but the conditions worsen every year. The lineup of golfers on the second tee is not surprising since on any hole you could have a group spending an infinite amount of time looking for balls. You get through one and two quickly and then two slices and two hooks on the 3rd, 4th & 5th with the wrong group and you are easily 30 minutes behind.

Par 5s should be scoring opportunities and times to allow groups to separate as you say, but this almost never happens.Taylormade SIM
