  • Vancouver's municipal golf courses in jeopardy?

    Does this sound familiar?

In Vancouver, a new park board report suggests the city should capitalize on the recently revived popularity of golf by developing a 10-year plan to preserve its six municipal courses, which have become serious money-makers in recent years – due to increased use as a result of Covid ignited participation.

However, some think at least one of its championship courses, Langara, should be partially developed for public recreation or housing.

But..the Park Board Chairman, Tom Digby said he thinks the Langara course is not a good place for housing and ought to be preserved for its biodiverse ponds, plants and forests.

Arguments are also being made as to the rationale for the public purse being used to maintaining the “elitist” status of golf, as well as concerns for Indigenous access to areas.

As least no one has yet suggested community vegetable gardens.

Will be interesting to watch this one, after what Toronto went through in the last few years.

What should Vancouver do with its municipal golf courses? | Vancouver Sun

If I was still in school, looking at urban planning and geography, the study of the status and state of debate over municipal golf courses, across north America would be an interesting issue to look at.

Fortunately there are no rules limiting the number of golf balls you can carry during a match!
