  • 3 iron substitute

    Nuts,

What would be a replacement for a 3 iron?

    5 wood? 7 wood?

    Thx

I carry a 21 deg 3H but I'm thinking of going back to the 3i from my set. Will figure it out on the range in the spring.
We may not be good but at least we'll be slow - PB

TM RBZ Tour 10.5 set to 9 deg with Aldila RIP Alpha 70s
Adams IDEA Super Hybrid XTD 17 deg stiff
Nike Machspeed 3H 21 deg stiff
    Wilson FG Tour V4 - 4i-GW - DG Pro S300 - TLT build
    Cleveland/TM wedges - 53 / 56 / 60 - all one length
    Cleveland BRZ Classic 1 putter
    Srixon Star XV
    Ogio Grom bag

Depends on the loft of your 3i. Example, TM P790 3i is 19* so a TM SIM MAX 5W is 18* may be considered an almost direct loft replacement.

That said, if you are replacing a 3i's distance, depending on how you hit a 7W, that may be better for a 3i replacement distance gap.

I noticed you did not list hybrids, some people prefer those to replace irons.

for comparative loft and shaft length I would suggest a 22* 4 hybrid.
            things change

The lofts have gotten so strong my 5 is now 22 degrees. Not quite sure I like it. Also have a Adams Tight Lies 7 wood in the same loft. In answer to the question.

Another Wedge? So few pro’s carry 3i’s anymore than club makers don’t even make them. Most are 4+, or 5+ with hybrids and utilities filling in the gaps.

If you are low single to + and 3i is what you need, more power to you. If you aren’t, very likely you are losing strokes with that 3i simply because it’s performance is probably so close to your 4i and you are giving up a club slot that could be filed with something more versatile. Which club that is - driving iron, hybrid, another wedge, 5/7w - would depend on your game /gaps I’d think.

My 4/5i stats are so similar I leave the 4i in the trunk.

                Just my .02

OP, what's the top end of your set look like?

                  Driver
                  3 wood
Then what's the next longest club?

                    Krank 11 driver +280 yds
Callaway FT 3 wood +240 yds
                    4 iron 200 yds

Nothing between 3 wood and 4 iron currently.

Thinking Tour Exotics 5 wood, TM SIM 5 wood etc
