  • Regripping with Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 Midsize

This is my first time regripping clubs and I've run into a problem that I would never have imagined.

I used an air compressor to remove the Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 Midsize grips from an old set of clubs having steel shafts with the intent of installing these grips on a different set of clubs having graphite shafts. My idea was to start with 5-PW. The YouTube video I watched made the installation seem pretty simple - no double-sided grip tape required - just apply masking tape and slide the grips on. It was remarkably easy. And it was fun to do.

Now that the job's done I'm saying to myself that the grips feel a bit spongy compared to the rock hard grips on the GW, SW and LW that I had done at Golftown.

Ultimately I learn from the Golfworks Canada website that my MCC Plus 4 Midsize grips have a core of .600" but the Project X Catalyst 50 Graphite shafts (senior flex) that I've installed them on have a butt diameter of .587".

I redid the 8- and 9-irons with an underlayer of hockey tape (why not?) followed by masking tape but the grips still feel spongy. Any suggestions as to how many layers of hockey tape or masking tape I need to apply? And maybe go for the double-sided grip tape after all?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

You've done nothing wrong, it's the grips themselves.

I bought a set of Plus 4 Midsize, installed them, used them for a round and then took them off because I found them to be too spongy.

When I saw this thread, I actually clicked in to warn you that they were very spongy in the event that you had not regripped yet.

My grips are actually for sale right now on Gumtree, our version of Kijiji, funnily enough.

I think no matter how much tape you put on, they'll still retain some sponginess. The more tape you put, the more you are going to change your swingweights as well.

Based on the information in the post above and your experience, maybe try some Lamkin crossline midsize. They are quite firm and last well.

CP2 Wrap or Pro Mids are softer, but not spongy.
Tour Wrap 2G Mids are good too, have a nice firm rubbery feel to them.
Both above models clean up really easy with soap & water to refresh their tackiness, mine last for years.

Go to GolfTown and squeeze the inventory and see what feel you prefer -> too many grips to choose from these days.

I had 14 clubs re-gripped with the MCC Plus 4's a few weeks ago and they don't feel spongy at all.

I had that issue when I used the compressor to put the MCC plus 4 on my 4 iron. I cut the grip off and put a new one on with Varsol and the new one is fine. Not sure why.
                In the Bag:

                Titleist 915 D3 - Diamana Whiteboard

Hmmmmmm. I might need to experiment and see if it makes a difference.

Ive used mcc plus 4 before. Both standard and midsize. Both installed with standard double sided tape.

                    two things.
                    1) i found the midsize quite large for a midside almost closer to a jumbo
                    2) the midsize lower hand was definitely way more spongy then the standard.

What i did was go standard with 6 wraps. If you insist on these. I stopped using mcc4 years ago. Great grip doesnt last long at all.

Thanks for all the help. I think I'll redo a couple of them with the roll of Intertape 591 Double Sided Golf Grip Tape that arrived yesterday and see how much of a difference there is.

My perception is that, yes, the MCC Plus 4 Midsize grips are a bit spongier than I expected. And I do think an additional layer of masking tape before applying the double sided tape has made them slightly more stable when the grips are twisted.Of course this could all just be a question of feel vs. real.

So now I find out ... from GolfWorks Canada website:

New soft material: 20% softer rubber in lower half for optimum feel in non-glove hand
