  • Chip or putt from off the green?

Was practicing up and downs from off the green and realized that my percentage were better chipping when face uphill slope to the hole
When facing downhill or significant sideways break putting gave me better percentage to get up and down

Know your game and play the better percentage shot.

I switched to putting anything on the fringe last year and have bee far more consistent.

From the fringe I always use an 8i whenever I can, rather that a wedge. I just seem to do much better with that than the putter. Its a shot I practice a lot, so I feel very comfortable with it.

Fortunately there are no rules limiting the number of golf balls you can carry during a match!

        from where off the Green?
if your ball sits on the collar it's better if you putt.
and chip any time the ball sits deeper just over the collar..
        Things change.

depends on the shot, your confidence with the shot and what's in front of you. I putt whenever I can as I will usually get it closer and less chance of something going wrong. At Cabot Cliffs 2 weeks ago, I putted a ton from way off the green including a 100 yard downhill put on 17.

If on the collar or light rough, I will use a hybrid and choke down to putter length. The small added loft helps move the ball properly. If i can do away with chipping, I will.
            No good deed goes unpunished.

I always play the lowest shot I can based on the situation, I find the shallower landing angle of say a 8 iron versus say a 56 gives me a truer forward bounce and stays on line better.
Sometimes a pitch is better as you could possibly take some break out of the shot.

On the fringe, Iíll usually try to putt. Within a few yards of the green, Iíll use my 7-iron, toe down, and swing like a putt. It gets the ball off the ground long enough to clear any rough, but on the green quick enough to allow for roll and control.

For me it comes down to what I think my miss may be, and then play to minimize that damage.

I will usually putt if I can, as my miss with that is short. If I chip and miss (blade) it is usually off the green on the other side.

Still getting the hang of this game!

As you mentioned, it depends on too many factors to give a general answer.
