  • Losing Distance With Gap Wedge

Been hitting my irons really solid lately with my 46* srixon zx7 going 124-125 which has always been pretty standard for myself but lately have noticed I am hitting my 50* vokey considerably shorter like 95-100 yards. I'm pretty sure i've been 'flipping' it and adding loft but not sure why it's only with that club. Contact, dynamic loft, etc. fine with my pw up but get to the 50* and all of a sudden it's not going anywhere. On top of my own mechanics, could shaft also play a part? I love the modus 120s in my irons, maybe having my gap wedge with the same shaft would help with timing? When I hit a partial shots with the 50 it's ok but the second i hit I full swing shot I lose the distance.....weird. Any ideas from anyone?

Oddly, those are pretty much my numbers as well. I can hit the PW 125 but usually take a little off a 9i to shorten the swing. Same for the GW. It is a gap for sure but have had that gap for a long time and can adjust accordingly.

Do they make a gap gap wedge?

As to why for you, I am not sure but I make better and more consistent contact with a 3/4 swing with a wedge.

Does it feel/act like a weaker ball flight (ballooning) with the Vokey? If so, your suspicion is probably right of adding loft by flipping the club head at impact. If not, maybe have your lofts checked to ensure they 50 deg isn't actually 51-52 deg.

I was going to say the same thing.

My gap wedge is also 50, but it goes the same distance as my 54.

I meant to get the loft checked but then winter came... gotta get it done.

I think I'm going to book in for a gapping/lie loft check once I have a few rounds under my belt and I've found my swing again. For the price it seems like money well spent (assuming I don't talk myself into a new driver while I'm there )

went and had the loft checked on my lunch and it's 50. i'll do some more practicing this week and see if I can figure it out. Think I will try and flight it a bit more and shorten up the backswing to see if I can improve my strike. My previous wedge set up was 47 53 59 which was gapped at modern golf and my numbers were 120 - 100 - 80. This was my first time ever using a gap wedge in my set up and maybe i'm just used to years of playing 3 instead of 4 wedges. Might also be an option to go back to my previous set up if I also hit the 54 (53) the same distance as my gap wedge.

your wedges aren't meant to be held to a particular distance, they' re meant for a particular condition.

In the winter sim season the only iron I'm hitting longer than the rest, v outdoors, is the gap. Hitting it up to 105 while it's usually 90ish outdoors. All the other irons are about 10 yards less than when hit outdoors. No idea why. The Ping G gap is the same as the rest of the set.

Damn! I was hoping that would be the problem.

It seems hard to imagine how you (or both of us) could have developed a swing change that would give us a 10(?) yd loss in our 50* but not the other clubs.
