  • Michigan Golf Package - Recommendations

We do a 3 day trip every year. What do you guys/gals recommend within an hour or two of Port Huron, Michigan.
Who has a nice package with lodging. We don't need 5-Star accommodations. Thanks for the recommendations.

Does it have to be a 'package' ....we never do a package, especially if you're over 55 (senior rate in Michigan at most courses)
Every great idea starts out as a blasphemy

I go to Boyne Mountain every year. They even have Canadian at par in May . . . also includes Bay Harbour at no extra charge . . . 3 days, we would play 6 rounds . . . and even one more before leaving in the morning . . .

Forgot to mention, access to 10 different courses and lots of different option for lodging.

If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.

I'm 61, the others are my 2 sons and their best friend (so mid 30's).

I suppose I can't get the senior discount for all 4, if I pay for the package?

        Probably going July or August.

We've gone to Tullymore Resort at Stanwood MI a couple of times, and enjoyed the 2 courses, and it is within or close to your couple of hours from Port Huron. http://www.tullymoregolf.com/golf/tullymore/

I neglected to mention, there is a casino with entertainment in Mt Pleasant, which is about 30 miles, if you're looking for some night life

I spent $10 in a casino once and it was the best $10 I have ever spent.

I figured out slots were boring and provided absolutely no excitement for me.

Further to the Lakewood Shores Resort suggestion above, we enjoyed it a few years ago. Three courses with good variety - one more of a warm-up course and the other two quite solid we found. Plus a shorter par three to dink around in one evening or something. Was good value for money we thought.

Oscoda is perhaps 3ish hours from Port Huron but may be worth looking into in your research, for comparison purposes. There are threads on it here.

They have Cdn $$ at par for certain periods, and invite writing for a quote to suit your needs. They are usually at the Toronto Golf Show (next month).

Some sample outings are described on their website.

We packaged a trip through the Doherty Hotel in Clare last September and had a great time. I think they have 15 courses to choose from but half are up to our "calbre" or quality. We stayed 3 nights and played Buck's Run, the Pohlcat and Eagle Glen. All very close to Clare. The package was about $300 US, only because we had to pay a $25 surcharge for the Pohlcat and Buck's Run. All 3 courses were in great shape, although the Pohlcat was undergoing a bunker renovation. We even met Dan Pohl on the course supervising the reno. Very cool, nice guy. Not very big or tall, considering he was one of the Tour's longer hitters in the 70's and 80's. The Hotel has lots of rooms, indoor pool and hot tub/jacuzzi. Their continental breakfast is upscale, lots to choose from. They have a nice restaurant and sports bar. Clare is a quaint little town, only 2 hours from the border. Henry Ford used to stay there on his way up north. There is a craft brewery just down the street and a few other bars in town. We played Sugarbush Golf Course on the way up in Davison, near Flint. Big Shooter's favourite course. You could also play the Timbers or the Fortress in Frankenmuth or Apple Mountain in Saginaw.

Nice course, but NOT in my Top 10 in the area (was certainly one of the cheapest "nice" courses I've played)

We did a stay and play at Eagle Crest in Ypsilanti, Michigan last summer.

Eagle Crest Golf Club. Metro Detroit's number one golf resort 20 minutes west of DTW airport. Championship golf, dining and banquet facility.

Cannot comment on the cost as we won the package but the course and accommodations were fabulous. I think it’s a bit more than an hour from the border but IMO it is worth it.

Tulleymore St Ives , Lakewood Shores and the Doherty are all goods packages. There is a package with Cherry Creek, Pine Trace and Shepards Hollow, we stayed in Auburn Hills which is closer to Port Huron.

I have played Cherry Creek, enjoyed it, we like to play courses close to the border at bluewater bridge, I hear Lakeview Hills in Lexington is good to, the town is very nice too, right on Lake Huron.
i would welcome any ideas suggestions for long weekend golf trips.
